lookin for help!!!!

My ty idles funny. When you turn on the electric fan it dies out. If you turn on the headlights, it dies. And when it warms up the idle jumps up and down consistantly between 1500 and 500. Ive searched all previous posts about this problem and most have been ground issues. Everything is grounded correctly and then some. I found one post that had the same problem and they had to tune the ecm to compisate for the extra voltage of the fan. Could someone with a tuner help me git her runnin right, im out of ideas.

Re: lookin for help!!!!

Put new battery in 4 months ago and new cables. Alt is about 4 months old too but the problem was goin on even before these items.

Re: lookin for help!!!!

whats the volts look like when it's idling and then what are they when the fan is on?

what efan are you using?

did you check for vacuum leaks?

Re: lookin for help!!!!

All the vaccum lines are new and nice and tight, checked for leaks several times with starter fluid and a vacuum gauge, all is good. The volt meter drops drasticly from around 14 to around 11ish on the dash. I dont know the make of the fan it came with the truck, but its a single fan about 16''.

Re: lookin for help!!!!

Unhook the fans controller and see if the problem goes away .Also check the voltage directly off the alt post and see what it puts out at idle . If it doesnt match what the dash displays , you may have a loss somewhere inbetween .

Re: lookin for help!!!!

ok, so the fan is hard wired with a switch on the dash, so i can turn it off and on. The voltage at the altinator matchs the dash.eeeerrrrr very irritating

pmd ya mrking, when you turn fan on it will idle but the voltage drops. it just wont idle like its suppose to

Re: lookin for help!!!!

What if you run it @ 2000 RPM and turn on the fan or the lights. What does the voltage gauge read then? You should be using a DVOM to verify the voltage readings. The dash gauge is less than accurate...

Re: lookin for help!!!!

ECMs add fuel with lower voltages. Not sure why, but they do and there is a field to adjust this. BUT, you shouldnt be at 11v with the fan or headlights on. You have a charging problem. Even new alternators fail, have it tested. Same with the battery- although it sounds more like the alt.

Re: lookin for help!!!!

ok, so at the alt it is runnin 14 and when u turn on the fan it only drops about .20. But in the truck the stock volt meter will drop when a voltage load is turned on . It even bounces up and down with turn signal on. But the motor stumbles when you turn on headlights, fan.

Re: lookin for help!!!!

If your voltage at the battery isn't dropping more than .2 v but the gauge in the truck is fluctuating then I'd suspect a poor ground somewhere. Start by checking your chassis grounds (battery, block etc.).

Re: lookin for help!!!!

grounding the alt case to the frame helped me gain .5 volts.. might not solve your issue but may also help some.. just a suggestion
