ty down (loud ticking)

Yesterday took the ty out and soon as i press the gas, ticking. Now i know the injectors tick. But i am talking loud. I would normally say valve adjustment. but i figured i would ask on here first. It comes from passenger side. Sound is coming from top of motor. If there is anything that i should look out for, i am all ears.

thanks

Re: ty down (loud ticking)

Sounds like a collapsed lifter, bent pushrod, or a rocker nut came loose. If its a bottom end knock it would most likely be a spun rod bearing.

Re: ty down (loud ticking)

IMHO anything to do with a valve will tick all the time. Pull the plugs, look for an odd one, and while they're out do a compression check. If it's a knock then evidence should be in the oil filter, cut and inspect.

Second thought from left field: Our injs are loud, maybe one has gone wacky and is making much more noise as fuel delivery goes up under load?

Re: ty down (loud ticking)

Sounds like a loose rocker nut to me. Ive had to change 3 of mine out this year. It really sucks and it puzzles me how it just comes out of nowhere. If it is definately coming from the top of the motor then it probably is a nut. Pull the valve cover, start the motor, loosen a nut til it ticks, then turn it back til it stops. The one that doesnt change is going to be your bad nut. Oh yeah, after the tick stops you have to go anywhere between 1/4 to 5/8 turn on the nut.

Re: ty down (loud ticking)

thank you all for the updates. before i came on here to see if there were any updates. i was told to run truck and adjust the nuts on rocker. At least everyone is in the same ball park. gonna dig in as soon as possible. snow coming tonight so got to find a garage to play in. let you know as i know.

not to hijack my own thread but this site has saved my ass more than i would like to admit. that search button is a life saver. i would use it now but i got to go for the day. anyways were can i donate to the site to help keep it running. if it was to go down i would be up the creek thing. thanks to all

I'm stickin' with my "it's not a rocker" theory. Will look forward to hearing what it was.

Re: ty down (loud ticking)

pulled plugs the other day. my first tune up on a ty. they all were showing signs of motor running lean. bought 48lbs injectors. they will be going on too. I will do one project at a time to know what caused the sound.

i must be falling for this truck ( i cant get it off the brain )

to be continued

Re: ty down (loud ticking)

a friend asked me if i slowly press the gas if it was loud? well it isnt loud at all if i apply the gas real slow. i had it up to 4k rpm, it was as quiet as it should be. but if i tap the gas quick there it is loud as f**k. so the injectors are gonna be the first try to fix it that i will do this week.

thanks for the ideas guys, it made me ask around more and get more feedback.

more details to come soon

Re: ty down (loud ticking)

after spending some time under the hood of my truck today. i have to say it is not the injectors. replaced all six and it was all good until one of the o-rings on the inlet was gashed. did the pressure test and it sprang a leak. got another new o-ring and its all good. loud ticking still there. gonna do more homework and report back

Re: ty down (loud ticking)

I've been chasing the same friggin' ticking..... arrghh...

Got out my stethoscope once more to check the motor top end and nothing... sounds like a sewing machine.... Ok a loud sewing machine. :D

Went to each injector... yup, that's what the ticking sounds like but not loud enough....

Finally went to the AFPR.... holy cow!!!! that's exactly what I've been hearing! All injectors feeding back through the fuel rail, into the AFPR, then into the fuel lines. I've got KB 40lb injectors and man are they loud in the cab!!

I'm gonna work on insulating the fuel lines and see if I can get the noise tamed down a little.

Re: ty down (loud ticking)

If the fuel rails are slotted where they mount to the manifold you can try loosening the bolts and moving the rail to the bottom of the slot or as high as it will go depending on how you look at it. There's even a service bulletin on it. Didn't make any difference when I did it.

Yup, adjusted mine and it didn't make any difference either... I suspect a fuel line touching the firewall and transmitting the noise.... will let you know what I find.

i tried this when i found my o-ring problem. it didnt make a difference. due to my truck having no cat no one wants to let me run the truck in there garage because it stinks. gonna try the rocker nuts soon as it is somewhat nicer out. cold in ny

thanks for still giving input
