Horn honks when turning?

This is starting to get frustrating... Anytime I turn the steering wheel the horn honks. I disconnected the horn but now I hear the dang horn relay clicking all the time. I guess he didnt like sitting for the last 5 years.... Has anyone else had this problem before?

i remember that happening to a friend of ours on another vehicle, but i don't remember the cause... Could it be bad/loose ground in the steering column?

Is your truck ready to drive yet?

Re: Horn honks when turning?

You didn’t say if you have a stock steering wheel or not.

From the steering wheel there is a wire that connects to a nylon connector (1/4 turn) on the base. This connector is spring loaded.

With age, the nylon cracks and breaks (sometime). Also, sometime the wire wares by rubbing against something behind the steering wheel.

Try removing you steering wheel and look around.

In most states, a working horn is a requirement.

What would be really funny would be seeing my look and actions when the freaking relay keeps clicking. I guess the hitting of the stock steering wheel and me yellling at the car would just be a bonus...

I will be pulling the steering wheel at lunch...

Re: Horn honks when turning?

Your horn relay has constant B+ applied and gets a ground through the switch behind the steering wheel.
So, like Bill said it's either a wire with worn insulation going to ground when you turn the wheel or the little nylon (plastic) sleeve that the contact sits in (also behind the wheel) is cracked and the contact is grounding.

Canadian law states that if your horn isn't working you must display this sign in your rear window:

"Horn Broken - Watch For Finger" :)

My wife had a similar incident with her first car, an '89 Jeep Cherokee (used a GM column BTW). Her horn would honk randomly regardless of steering wheel position. Her problem was a little piece of metal that was making a contact in the horn switch. Could be the same as what you are experiencing.

Re: Horn honks when turning?

:rotf: Im not trying to jack your thread but this brings up one hell of a memory. Back in 2000, I got a drag racing ticket in my Vette. Well, thanks to accumulation of points I lost my license for a year but was given a red license and could only drive for work purposes. My family had a cabin down in Cucharra and I used to go down htere every couple weeks during the summer and just hang out. So I lsot my license in about May 01 and always had people drive me everywhere but got real tired of it and decided to get out of town for the weekend. So I hopped in the Vette and headed for the cabin. Well as Im getting on the on ramp to I-25 here in town htis jackass cuts me off so I smash the horn button honking at him. Now keep in mind Im getting on the highway w3here you dont make sharp turns. So I get all the way to Walsenburg and pull off at the first exit where that Pizza Hut is. This is about 120 miles from home, and I stop into that gas station thats there. I wasnt really nervous or anythign because I was making it a huge point to drive sane and all that good stuff. So I go in get my stuff take a leak and come back out to the car. I had to turn a sharp left to get out of the parking lot and as Im turning the wheel this state trooper drives right in front of me as my horn starts honking all by itself  So I quickly grab the horn button and rip it off pulling the wire off as well and the tropper stops dead in his tracks and just looks right at me!! So I start shittin and just give him a confident nonchalant smile and nod to him. He kind of shakes his head and drives on. I guess you had to be there but it was not only super embarassing but couldve gotten me thrown in jail or even worse taken my license away for even longer.
