Re: What might have been. And for the Typhoon - Was.

I want to know what these look like:

Gmc Truck Typhoon WA5108 3953,8900 Exterior Tangier Orange 92 - 92
Gmc Truck Typhoon WA9662 44151 Exterior Pastel Blue 92 - 92
Gmc Truck Typhoon WA9096 42480 Exterior Dk Red 93 - 93

Are these colors still possible? If I were to have my truck repainted, is it possible to use any of those colors and get the true match?

it gives the mixture code on the site, so i don't see why not.

that's what i figured, but wasn't sure.

i was hoping it wasn't like trying to get the same color house paint a year later. They never seem to get it right, even though it's the same brand, same code, etc. seems like someone is always changing the mix just enough to make it not work.

now i just need to find real life example of all those colors so i can see what they really look like.

If someone is willing to be a test subject, it might be interesting to get some j/y fenders and paint them the oddball colors, just to see how they look. A spare piece of busted cladding attatched and sprayed the accent color might make it seem more realistic :2cents:

Are the interior panels painted in the same process as the exterior ? I could put those 2 shades of dark charcoal to use ..

Tangier Orange I don't know. I can't 'visualise' it either....

Pastel Blue= RPO Code 26. VERY common on 90,91, some 92 Blazers and P/Ups.

Dark Red=RPO Code 48. Is this the same RPO as Garnet? (I've misplaced my little RPO dechipher booklet. I feel lost without it, and can't confirm this without it).

That's what I figured, and I'm sure I've seen Pastel Blue before, but it's always a different experience to see the color and the name together. I was also wondering that very same thing about the "dark red"...

But I'd really like to know what late 80's/early 90's Tangier Orange looks like.

What color are you referring too ? ;)

Anyway did the factory use standard hvlp guns to spray the interior plastics ?

I'm very familiar with these trucks, and their finishes. I don't think there are ANY interior pieces that are "painted" plastics. They are molded with the desired color plastic. This is supported by parts listings with a different PN for each color.

The only 'painted' part in the interior that I can think of is the steering column. Maybe the seat tracks also. But these are always black.

So would I. I suspect that we will 'know' it when we see it, if indeed it was actually released for production.

if you have any of the codes, any Sherwin-williams automotive division store can look it up and make it. also they sell through autobody suppliers their paint too, but best bet would be through their company owned stores using their codes.

Interesting.... I have attempeted to clean interior panels / remove glue and adhesive from velcro etc. for cell mounts, dash covers and other little stick on crap and the color comes off if you use anything much stronger than rubbing alcohol or a citrus cleaner (naptha, laquer thiner and most wax & grease removers kill the color and or melt the plastic!)?

Appears to be painted / coated to me and the base plastic appears to be black, gray or tan on different parts. We have so many different shades of med. and dark gray (soild color and then the metallic like the radio and door lock bezel's) then two shades of charcoal that I know of for sure, maybe more?

18DN is the only one I can verify. Any one know the other color codes for sure and what color is supposed to be where? I have two interiors that need serious love and this would really help since many of the panels are faded and the back side of them is not "textured" so they dont look the same. Didn't find much info in the PPG color book other than the 18DN.

Actually I agree with you. But color of the back side of virtually every part is the same as the front.

OK. The METALICS are paint. I forgot about these.

Sometimes the formula changes from year to year, even though the name and RPO remains the same. I can't add any additional info to what you have already researched in the PPG stuff.

There is a code 'BYB'. I found a formula for it in PPG. It is the silver trim color for the door lock inserts, grill, radio bezel, etc. It has purple in it. I've used it for a lot of things where I wanted a "stock-looking" 'silver', but didn't want to just give it a coat of Krylon..... The upper intake on my Syclone gets a lot of comments painted this color. It looks like powder-coat.

So is this "BYB" a GM code and if so what does it go too? Same matallic "grayish / silver" as the radio bezel etc.?

Well I think (not sure) that a lot of the plastic is dip or dye coated hence the color on the back side but I agree with you that all the parts are a uniform color in and out however they do it.

Thanks !
