Project TTTYPHOON

Well it is time for me to start a project thread. My original plan was to build a high performance Syclone but opted to sell the project in favor of a typhoon, Since I already have my Xtreme and the typhoon offers more creature comforts, which gives me more opportunity to for custom interior( My favorite part of a vehicle) and the ability for a cruiser of sorts.

The project is mostly being performed by myself, friends, family and a few old school guys from way back. My first truck was a 92 blazer (still have) but the last few years have been working on classics such as a 68 impala, sisters street rod, countless el camino’s and so on. But this project is more of a modern day streetrod so the best of both worlds.

We have been working on the truck for the last couple months and some of the build details are a half ton front differential, a 12 bolt rear end with 33 spline axles, rack and pinion steering, Full coil over suspension, Custom tubular control arms, triangulated 4 link in the rear, Front and rear Sway bars, fully boxed frame, c5 disk brakes on all four corners, Hand made sumped aluminum fuel cell, Also will be featuring 18x 10 in the front and 18x12 inch in the rear typhoon wheels( Stock appearance but bigger). Enough for now on the chassis on with a few pictures. I only get to work on the weekends which I go to school in Fargo, ND and the truck is in the Twin Cities, MN. But after Dec. 10 I am done with school for the semester and will hopefully get a lot done in that time.

I would really like to acknowledge my parents for their constant support and Mike(Acehaag)Haag since the chassis fabrication has been done completely at his shop and he has spent many hours designing parts and helping work on the project. There are many others to thank and they know who they are. Thanks again and now our feature presentation.

Here is a picture of the truck it is a 92 typhoon black/black.

Re: TTTyphoon

Here are a few of the frame close to when we started. We both are bad at remembering cameras but are pretty good about it.
Threw the truck on a junk blazer frame and got to cleaning the typhoon frame.

Notice anything missing in this picture? The half ton diff. requires a little cutting.

Here are some picture of the rear first is the 12 bolt housing with an 8.8 in the back ground.

Here you see we had to cut out around the old bump stops they hold moisture and such now needing some minor repair.

And here is the very early mock up of the rear end.

Re: TTTyphoon

Well I have a few more of the updated pictures of the frame. And a few more pictures of the rack and pinion installed with the front half ton diff. So on with the pictures.
This is the drivers side looking in

Here is coming from the passenger side front looking at the Differential and rack and pinion. You can see we still need to weld in the upper mount but are waiting until the motor mounts are in place. You can also see where the original mount was cut off and then re-welded on.

On to the rear.

Passenger side being mocked up and Mike has now rear designed the mounts to the frame and made a 5 position mount. Also they are dual adjustable upper links.

And here are the front lower link bar mounts.. Mike sectioned the mounts and thinned them up to be a nice tight fit for the Hiem Joints. And the lower bars are also double adjustable which is why the notch is longer since the axle can be moved forward and backwards. The notch is also more of a recessed bump stop as well since it will be mounted in there.

Re: TTTyphoon

Here is a picture of the boxed frame.. You can see it in others as well it is only tacked but should be fully welded this weekend or so. It is the passenger side frame rail.

TTTYPHOON018.jpg

I would also like to thank Jermey (Blazin2wd85) He spent all day cutting most of the pieces out with a cut off wheel and fitting them. Task should have been easier but my new plasma cutter was broken when I got it so he stepped up and got it done.

Also you may have noticed it is now sandblasted and much nicer looking, I am putting down weld thru primer on the inside of the frame and will be painted once we are finished with the fabrication.

Also I would like to add that I wrote this up late last night and would like to add the trucks deadline is begging of March and to acknowledge some of the generous sponsors as well which will be filled in later. And last but not least the truck will be at SEMA in 08' which is pretty cool a Sonoma GT and a Typhoon. So someone get a Syclone going and we can get the trifecta going.

Otherwise there should be progress updated saturday evening and I will tru sometime between now and monday get some pictures of the body and interior.

Hope you enjoy.

Oh and thanks for the pictures mike.

Re: TTTyphoon

Very innovative mods.. Great thread.. What are you going to do for motor mounts?

Thanks we are making tubular motor mounts with a sleved (basically a poly leaf spring bushing) and a plate mount similar to what the 2.8 mounts use on V8 swaps.

To explain it better we are running tubing out from the stock location to a 1 3/4" piece of metal which is the bushing seat. Then the plate will slide over it, bolted to the engine and then the motor mount bolt run through the middle. If this is hard to understand we are working on them this weekend and I can post pictures. And the driverside will be removable so the diff can be removed.

Thanks agian and comments or suggestions are always welcomed.

Very interesting and nice to see someone doing something new.

What are the full plans?

Re: TTTyphoon

I've done some mockup with an explorer r&p(looks very similar to yours) and the stock front diff. The full size diff actually looks like it provides more clearance due to the location of the mounts.. Did you have the tube on the axle shortened on that diff to accommodate our narrower stance? Also will our axle shafts bolt up that those plates?

*****EDIT******

OK, looking back at the pics I think I made a few false assumptions.. What is the 1/2 ton front diff from? I assumed it was from a full size truck...??

Also it looks like you cut the front mount off and welded it back to the top of the diff to allow better placement of the rack..??

Thanks,
-Matt

Yup the mounts were cut and rewelded. The bottom one as well. The problem with mounting a rack on a stock frame would be were the motor mounts are located. The diff is from a 96 silverado. Also the Mustange rack measures the same as the expoler rack. (Thanks for the mesurements btw) But this one is a quicker ratio.

The half shafts I am not sure on the axles are exactly half way under the framme. SO if you look up straight in line with it it lines up on the seam weld on the bottom of the frame.. I will take a picture. And the diff is stock size not narrowed.

I will take a few more pictures this weekend so it shows alittle better detail.

thanks

Great work, it's great to see some innovation.

Thanks my friend Mike (Acehaag) who is new to the forum have the mentality to make it work and it is out of necessity we are building the chassis. And when I am done sure I will come down but I eat alot so be prepared for that

Thanks, the full plan is a custom interior will be updated in a couple days, full paint a 6 speed manual and a built Tbss transfercase. And I did not stutter in the project name except we are installing a little more displacement as well.
The truck is going to be set-up for taking turn, cruising and some straight line... But it is being built to drive.

thanks for all the feedback guys keep it up and if you want a picture of anything particler let me know.

Re: TTTyphoon

Well not a lot got done this weekend, but still made progress. Mike got the rest of the plates for the shock mounts front and rear done. We mocked up one of the rear shock mount bars, and cleaned the shop a lot... Also I got the fun part of welding in the boxing. Most of that is finished now.
On with the pictures.....

Re: TTTyphoon

And for where the diff lines up under the frame

TTTYPHOON020-1.jpg
[/IMG]

TTTYPHOON019-1.jpg
[/IMG]

The full size diff is about 1 inch wider than a stock syty diff. 1/2" on each side.
Also tested to see if a stock half shaft would bolt up and no the bolt pattern is to small but we are making a custom shaft by using the inter mount off the halfton and the outer shaft from the typhoon. So it will work out.

when we tear down the frame I will get some better pictures of the rack mounts.

Oh I forgot to add the tow hooks are their for strapping down purposes not towing. Although I do plan to plan to drive the truck a lot.Hopefully it will allow me..hahaha

Re: TTTyphoon

So when you moved the front mount on the diff I noticed that you have repair written where it originally was. Did you cut into the case of the diff or something and have to fill a hole? Also, did you gut the front diff to do this welding work or did you just weld it up with the guts in it. MIG or TIG for the aluminum welding?

I'm thinking that moving that mount is a very good idea to accommodate the rack and am considering doing it myself. I'll prolly wait and see how the full size diff works out for you and maybe even go that route.

Thanks,
-Matt
