New Alaska Owner - Sy #2227

My wife and I live in Anchorage and we were talking about buying a truck but we didn't want an ordinary truck just like everybody else. I was looking at the Alaska Craigslist and found our Syclone listed for sale. Needless to say we bought it (my wife's birthday present to me) back in late August.

The body and interior are in excellent shape with only 54,900 miles on the odometer. The motor had some serious issues and is in the process of being replaced. I found a new "91 crate motor & tranny on craigslist in Palmdale California and had it shipped up. It's being installed right now and should be back in running condition by the end of next week. We are putting it back to original showroom condition. Even though the existing tranny was ok I am having the new tranny installed with the new motor. The front driveshaft is being replaced as well.

Since I am putting the truck back in stock form I traded my raised hood for a stock hood with another local Sy owner and I took off the fancy side view mirrors and put the originals back on after cleaning them up and repainting them. The interior is all original except for the stereo which an aftermarket Sony unit. I do want to install a truck bed tonneau cover and a remote start for those cold mornings. Our garage is filled up with our classic cars.

We am looking forward to being part of the SyTy family! I was going to post a couple of photos but I couldn't find a way to do that. The insert image didn't seem to work.

Yes, it is a SyTy motor & tranny complete with turbo. A little history behind it as I was told ....The motor & tranny were brand new back in 1991 but were never installed because PAS went out of business. The motor was originally obtained by someone associated with PAS who bought up a bunch of parts and other goodies when PAS shut down.

The guy I bought the motor & tranny from had gotten it from this guy back in 1995 and he was going to install it in a project vehicle. He never got around to doing anything with it and it was just taking up space in storage for a number of years. Finally an ultimatum from his wife to clear out the garage (HaHa!) pressed him to selling it. I have confirmed the serial numbers and it is specifically for the SyTy.

I think I remember seeing a post on here that was a motor and transmission for sale on craigslist in CA. Probably the same one. Congrats on the truck. You are doing more to it in the span of a few weeks than most get to do ever.

Congrats. I like your style...returning it back to stock. I'm in the process of doing the same thing (not much needed) with the Ty I bought from ANCHORAGE exactly a year ago. (fron dude who worked at Alaska Sales and Service)

Couple of SyTyers up there...you should get together.

To post pics, load photos on Photobucket account (or similar) and copy in the IMG code.

Re: New Alaska Owner - Sy #2227

I checked out the posting links and I believe they are talking about the same motor I got. A couple of the mechanics that are working on my Sy don't think the motor is brand new either. Now being the motor is 16 or 17 years old that of course means it's not brand new. The issue would be whether or not it has ever been installed and used in a vehicle. According to the person I bought it from; it has never been installed in a vehicle. Don't know anything before that for sure. He said the PAS guy he bought it from said it had not been used except for run testing at the factory.

I have spoken with a couple of SyTy owners up here; Montana Pearson Sy #0633 & Tim Gordon Ty #1952. I've only spoken with Tim on the phone, haven't actually met him in person yet. Regarding photos I'll post them on the web with links in the messages. Thanks.

Yep, Tim ("Timbo" on here) actually went to check out my truck for me before (actually, day of) I bought it.

Ok, I created an account with Photobucket so here they are. The first two were taken in my front driveway about 3 weeks ago and the third was taken by a previous owner who lived in either Washington State or Oregon.

Here are 3 photos of the new motor installation. The first two are of the new motor in the engine bay and the 3rd is the old motor on an engine rack. The throttle body has been removed from the old motor and, yes, it does have chrome valve covers. Not sure where or what I'm doing to do with the old motor & tranny. The tranny is still good and the motor can be overhauled or used for parts. My garage is already packed with 4 classic cars.

The new motor and tranny installation are completed. Now it's in the process of getting tuned and running right. As of today (Friday 11/2) the motor starts and seems to idle fine but doesn't want to rev up very well. After fixing a fuel leak my mechanic is trying to find out why it seems to lack power. I am hoping this will be resolved and it will back on the road before the end of next week.

The work is finally done :D Sy #2227 is back on the road and running fantastic in stock form. The new motor and tranny are working great. Took it for a drive with the wife last night to Eagle River (a town about 10 miles from here) and it ran flawlessly. Bumped it up one time to 80 which took no time at all. It's great to have it back!

I am selling the original motor and tranny. More on that in the parts for sale forum. Here are photos of the final install and one of the truck with the stock hood back on.

My wife works for the company that did the work on our truck. FATS (Foreign Auto Truck Supply) works on all brands and the mechanic who worked on our truck has experience with SyTy's so he knew what he was doing. Having all the right equipment and tools on hand help greatly as well. Yea, we'll have to pay but at a discount and our Sy was worth it! :D

Been a while since I've been here on SyTy.net. Good to see you joined, Dave. I think I've got a couple of pics of your truck from when it first arrived in AK.

You see the Typhoon on craigslist on Sunday that sold for $2k within a few hours? Shame to miss out on that.
