Lifter Preload FYI, Comp 875 race lifters

I was doing my homework on lifter preload and I came across this:

http://www.compcams.com/Technical/FAQ/FAQLifters2.asp

I did a nonadjustable factory roller valvetrain on my vortecs and reused the stock lifters, but this is good information for future reference.

COMP Cams® offers several series of hydraulic lifters which require different amounts of preload. High-Energy™ lifters will require .030” to .050” preload. The more competition-oriented hydraulics lifters, such as the Pro Magnum™ series will require only .002-.004” preload, which will typically require a dial indicator to set correctly.

The High Energy are the 850's, the Pro Magnum are the 875 "not for street use" race lifters. I know a lot of people run the 875s here, and the difference in preload sounds huge to me, so I wanted to make a note of it. HTH. :2cents:

I never knew about the 0.002-0.004 preload for the 875's, good info.

Man, thanks for posting that Tooky and TMY, I was about to buy a set yesterday too. I guess I need to do more searching on that. ;)

Glad to hear it helped.

If you come up with a better solution for a good roller lifter, post back because I might need a set next year.

So since the 875's seem to have problems holding together, whats the next best lifter?

I have heard all pros / cons, bitches / compliments, heard the guys side vs. Comp's and seen broken lifters. All I can say is it seems that for every one that had a problem there was one that had good results / no problem. We have never had a failure in about 20 or so sets but do follow Comps instructions and what I feel is actually more important..... check pushrod length and geometry / interference..

If you don't feel good with comps then go with Morrel's.

The prices I've found on them are in the range of $4-500.. The higher $ for hydraulic and the lower price on the solid's.
