The problem may be one of several.

Give us back responses from these:

Like Raist103 asked, does your cable get its power from the cig lighter?

The black wire should go to pin A and the orange wire should go to pin M. If looking at the ECM connector under the dash, A is the upper most right hole and M is the one right under it.

Is the com port on your laptop active? If it is, what com port is it?

Is DM looking at the correct com port?

Let us know. Answers to the above and we can help better.

Some of the ALDL cables get the power for the IC chip or transistors from the com or USB port. Many times the laptop doesn't have enough current to poser the chip in the cable. That is why many of the cables come with a cig lighter connection. Maybe a friend has a laptop or another cable you can use just to test.

Re: Datamaster question

check the serial port settings to be sure you have selected a valid port #.

I think it defaults to COM1 and I have to change mine to COM2 on a new install.

If thats one of the homegrown cables it probably needs the 12V power to work.

I have both, the homegrown cable that requires power and the AKM cable that does not.
The AKM cable works 10times better.

Re: Datamaster question

Plug into the 9 pin (com port). The 15 pin connection is for external video. To be honest, you don't know what else is behind your dash. There just maybe power to it, I can't tell from the pictures. But if not, it may work off of your laptop. The # 7 pin in the com port has 5 volts and may be enough to power the ALDL.

Like mentioned above, connect it all up and bring up DM. select setup and select the one of the com ports that are displayed in the drop down.

Let us know.

Re: Datamaster question

I just downloaded Datamaster again, and will try it when i get home. Do i need the cd to run it. I never got it when i bought it.Thoes wires go through the dash to the port i got in my center glove box. There are only two wires that go to the box in the glove box.

Re: Datamaster question

Try downloading DM in to your laptop, but only install it once it is hooked up in your truck. The issue maybe that its downloading the drivers but not linking them to the com port. If you install it with it all connected it will see the cable and your ECM. Uninstall it first to remove the driver that has already been installed.
Good luck

Re: Datamaster question

If you know your hardware is working correctly, read the DM topic about changing the 'latency' settings on the COM port.... mine wouldn't communicate until I did that. All has been fine since.

Re: Datamaster question

What laptop do you use, a "new one" or a few years old?
read somewhere here on the forum that newer laptops has problems with Datamaster.
My datamaster wouldnt work with a new HP laptop (tried evrything com, baud rate etc) but worked directly with an older samsung.

I use an IBM ThinkPad that I picked up from a fellow member here on the boards.. works great, but just one USB port :(

Re: Datamaster question

Ya,still didn't work. But i'll uninstall it and reinstall with it all hooked up. If i needs power where does it get it from there is not power supply for it. I have a Compaq EVO it's black and silver, laptop don't know how old it is. I'll give it another shot before i throw it out the window,Just kidding! Thanks All!
