2-piece Timing cover

Anybody had luck with one of these that didn't leak?

Might have to pull the cover from time to time to play with cam timing, and I want something that won't make me pull the pan every time.

The cast AL ones look nice, but I can't really justify spending that kind of $$ on just the cover.
(Unless that's what I need to do to prevent a leak.

Thanks,

Re: 2-piece Timing cover

i just got the steel one from competition products in WI, it doesnt fit the best but hasnt leaked, i just put a good amount of rtv on it. the bottom seal is the worst becuase the rubber seal pushes out funny from the pan on, it had a gap when first putting it together but then resealed with more rtv and it seems to hold fine
I only have 200 miles on the new engine but it should work. I too like the alum but didnt want it anymore flashy than it is now.

Was kinda looking at this one...

Only thing I don't like about it is the edelbrock script stamped in. Looks good otherwise.

The only other alternatives are chrome. Really don't want to do that, as it makes it evident
that the motor has been apart. If I end up going that way, I'll put the chrome valve covers I have on as well...

Later,

Dig...I'm $75 on that Edlebrock cover, but if that Comp Products one will fit, then that's A LOT cheaper. Wish I could get Comp Products stuff.

When you say "doesn't fit the best", how so?

I really don't know why the Edelbrock one wouldn't fit. The only differences I'm aware of in SBC/v6 covers are the # of bolts, and the depth of the cover (to clear the timing gear).

I like the look of this from a strength standpoint. Any idea why/where it leaks?
(or is it just loose bolts)

Re: 2-piece Timing cover

There are a few different companies that make the same one as edelbrock without the script, and alot cheaper super sunny and RPC Ill have prices shortly

I just checked RPC/SS and the R7122 is $18.99, but specifically says that it will NOT clear a double roller timing chain. I have this in stock actually if anyone needs one.

It is chrome BTW.

Try this one...

BTW, I have a billet Manley 3 pc cover on a Big Block Chevy in my boat and it does not leak a drop...

You had me until you said chrome. I don't have a double roller (I'm the silent-chain type), so this would be ok. It'd get the play-doh test for clearance, anyway.

One of the locals ran into this, now that I think about it... had shavings in the oil from the gear rubbing the cover.

I guess I could rough it up and paint it... seems like sort of a waste.

I like the looks of this... sneaky.

What's supposed to seal the outer cover to the lip that goes over the pan? There's no bolt or gasket down there...

I'm kinda wondering why they say they only fit the '86 and older blocks... unless it has to do with the roller cam.

Later,

thats where it didnt seal the best, i rtv'ed and cranked down on the bolts that are there, theres a full gasket that goes between the two. I also have a comp double roller and it works fine. they say doubles wont fit under stock covers also but they do. i might thry and take better pics if i can of the seal surface.

Looking at the pics to figure this out...

Would it be possible to weld a couple nuts to the back side of the frame that sits next to the block and mates with the pan? Wouldn't take much clamping to hold that together.

*EDIT* I notice the Edelbrock one does have bolts on the bottom.. doesn't look like the CP one does?

Does the frame fit ok against the pan/block? I can see a problem that unless you have bolts holding the frame to the block, the rubber pan seal would try to push the frame up, and wouldn't stay on there the best... Is that what you're talking about?

Re: 2-piece Timing cover

yeah, its kinda hard to explain, the frame stays on by the pins, but the thick rubber pan gasket fits tight and pushes up on the frame, so when the cover trys to seal it leaves a gap a tthe bottom with no rtv. i could slide a peice of paper between the frame and pan when it is bolted down, i then took it off and put rtv on both side of the frame, gasket, and cover and cranked it down, if there was some way to bolt the bottom frame to the cover it would work great, i just made it work for for me,
i hope that makes sense

now that i did all this, i really dont need a 2 peice cover, cause i dont plan of changing cam timing. But for how cheap it was and the fact that i needed one i said f-it and just bought a 2 peice.

Hood-

Does this one have the bolts along the bottom lip like the edelbrock one?
