Another question about overboost

I did a search on over boost but didnt really find the answer I was looking for. I have a bone stock Sy. I just added a cone air filter and when I get to about 80 mph it hit over boost. I know I should get a real boost guage but all I have is the stock one right now. How do I fix this over boost problem. Do I need to replace the wastegate hose? Should I get a boost controller?

Re: Another question about overboost

Correct me if I'm wrong here but the stock chip cuts the injectors off at close to 15psi.

I had JS Manufacturing burn me a chip for no boost cut,MPH limit removed,3bar map,Rev-limit raised. It runs in open loop which isn't what I wanted for a daily driver but the AFR's according to my wide band are damn close to where they should be

Once you open your Syclone up it's all over :rotf: There's no turning back!

That's what I'd do if I were in your place... Chip and 3bar map. Keep your old parts if you ever want to go slow again. ;)

Best to get it running right in stock form before starting to mod. If you were putzing around in the vicinity of the turbo intake, it is likely that you bumped the wastegate control hoses. The stock end boots get brittle, and will crack easily. Often the crack is at the inside corner of the elbow, difficult to see. If they have never been replaced, now sounds like a good time.

I've never heard of switching to a cone filter causing overboost, so best to look for other things that could have happened while you were in there....

Re: Another question about overboost

Well many months later I have the syclone back out of storage. I got a laptop for datamaster but my USB port is not working. I dont know if its broke or I dont have the proper drivers installed.
I did manage to hook up my boost gauge. I dont think Im having over boost any more. The highest the boost gauge ever reads is 15 psi. I did a pull up to 100mph and did not cut out once. Im not really sure what the difference is now. I didn’t do anything since storage. I do know that I adjusted the wastegate until I almost ran out of tread. Is this the way they normally sit? The sy seems to like it that way and still boosts close to 15 psi.

Re: Another question about overboost

FYI
It was still cuting out after I adjusted the wastegate all the way out last year. But has not cut out yet this spring.

Just pluging in a regualr USB disk does not work. I think I need some regular drivers. Im affraid to go online with this laptop. I will just reload software and see if that helps.

Anyone know the answer to the question I asked about how far the wastegate threads sit on a stock truck?

Stock setting is that you can see 7/8 of the WG flapper pin when looking through the hole in the arm. Basically, ever so slight tension on the rod.

I would guess you have one of the following going on:

Some sort of free-flow exhaust or a hollowed-out cat.

WG flapper arm is sticky when the engine is warm.

Boost solenoid or the related plumbing around the solenoid is bad/cracked.

Generally, unless the truck has been stored indoors in a controlled environment, any stock vacuum plumbing still left on the truck should be replaced. 15 years takes its toll on rubber parts.

Yeah I replaced all vacuum hoses and boost solenoid. I was just curious as to why I had to adjust the wastegate rod so far out for problems to get fixed. Yeah there is a possibility of all those things. From what I can tell the exhaust is all stock still. Thanks for your reply

When you coming up to the cities? I'll be more than happy to take a look at your wastegate. If you haven't replaced all the vacuum lines yet you should get some silicone hose and when you come up this way we can replace that too. www.hosetechniques.com is where I bought my kit from.

Yeah I have been meaning to hook up with you and Justin. This month is real busy for me. Im gonna try and head up there some time in July. Thats when things should be settling down for me. I need to put in a fuel pump and adjustable fuel pressure regulator also. There should be plenty of things for us to work on. Just let me know how deep you want to get

Re: Another question about overboost

sounds good. one thing you will learn is theres always a TON of sh*t to fix on these damn trucks.....they sent a balance shaft cam to my builder, so I'm still waiting for the motor to arrive. but when it does the fun begins for me!!!!!!!!! hehehehe
