South Side Machiene Lift bars!

I put on the SSM lift bars I purchased used from a guy. (they are not made anymore)

I removed the large lower leaf spring and kept in the 2" drop blocks. The ride height went down 1/2" and the ride quality was unchanged.

The SSM's are designed to not allow the axel/suspension to wrap up with torque.
The truck usto "Squat" real hard when launching. That is GONE.

It now projects up and forward keeping the front end from unloading and plants the rear
end hard!!!

I had a set on my 2wd SBC S-10 years ago and they worked awsome. It makes perfect
sense to use these on the Typhoons since keeping the weight on the front end helps traction along with not allowing the suspension to soak up all the torqe your making.

I can duplicate a set if anyone would like to try them... I spent 6months looking for a used set!

Re: South Side Machiene Lift bars!

I'll take a picture of them and post it.

The neat picture to post would be a "launch" with the rear of the truck not looking like a

400lb chick just got dropped on the tail gate

The AWD made my wife more comfortable at the track racing. She said she'd have to

steer a bit when she had a good launch but was not worried because it would streighten

out quickly.

The South Sides make it rock steady on the launch now. No need to steer because it

launches streight no wiggling around.

Anyhow... I'll get you guys some pic's. :)

I'd be interested. Possibly doing some work to my DD Jimmy and these would help.

Re: South Side Machiene Lift bars!

When installing these you have to leave only two leaf springs. If you have more than that attatched it will ride like a chuck wagon and make your stomach upset! I did this with my S-10. Took me a few days to figure out what I had to do. Two springs seem to be perfect for height and ride.

I don't know what the fiberglass rear spring/s would be like.. I'd assume it'd be fine as the actual deflection of the springs is greatly reduced when the bars are installed.

Drop Blocks are ok. No issues with them.

Hood... Send me a e-mail when you get a chance.. UR50SLO@aol.com

Re: South Side Machiene Lift bars!

Maybe I'm missing something, but these look a lot like a set of old slapper bars, only longer.
(ie, they contact the eyelet vs. the spring)

Is there more to 'em?

Re: South Side Machiene Lift bars!

What would you charge to reproduce a set and would they work for the SY? Thanks.

Re: South Side Machiene Lift bars!

They are similar by the nature of the design. There is a strap (U bolt strap) at the front that keeps contact of the snubber on the front of the spring mount. There's little to slap with this design.. Lol.

As the rear end tries to twist upward with torque, the lift bars transmit that torque to the front leaf mount and try to "lift" the body up and force the rear of the bars toward the ground thus applying all that force to the tires/ground.

I use the main bar style like this on my 86 Hybrid Camaro too. I use coil overs with them.. but the function is the same..... Plant the tires and eliminate body/suspension squat/torque loss.

I've seen regular "traction" bars and they just don't do the same thing. That's why I waited 6 months trying to find the real thing. Summit sells lakewood traction bars for S-10s. Battlebars are 400+?

We'll bring it to the Nats... It'll be the one with the rear tires not burried in the wheel wells ;)

This is a picture of my S-10 with lift bars.... Notice how much distance there is between the wheel well and tire? With out the lift bars the rear tire is buried in the wheel well and the truck is twisted up.

I have a picture of it before I installed them too. I'll find that at home and take a picture of it.

SSM made the bars for around 150.00 a set...

I'm guessing I could have them made for 100.00 a set. I'll check with my friend on steel price.

Re: South Side Machiene Lift bars!

They look like they hang awefully low. Do they scrape alot on trucks that are 2-3 inches lower? Thanks.

Re: South Side Machiene Lift bars!

They don't go any lower than that...... They take the place of the U bolt holder under the springs. The shocks attatch directly to the lift bars. Ride height is # of springs and drop block height.
She has not hit anything with them yet... Although I'd bet it'd do a bang up job on some road kill :)
~Scott..

I don't think the Lakewoods are near the same. They are just slapper bars.

Re: South Side Machiene Lift bars!

If there are around $100 give or take, make me set and I'll "test drive" them with my 2" lower Flex - A - Forms and a 1" block and I'll let every body know how they work?

They have the U bolt to keep it in contact with the spring eyelet like your lift bars. Lakewood even calls them lift bars. They sell slapper bars, too.

Re: South Side Machiene Lift bars!

Heck if they are a duplicate of South Sides Get'm..!!!!!!
What's the cost?
Can you find a actual picture of them?

That'll be awsome if Lakewood is making the same ones. Good research dude!
