Thinking of using a different turbo....help me!!! ---

pppssssshhhhhtttttttttttt
I was going to use a GN pte63 turbo for my new setup, but the one I have is used with 20k miles on it. I have been quoted about $300 to rebuild it.....but now I am thinking of just getting a NEW unit instead....something SYTY specific. RPM has a PTE63 for $995 thats SY specific , but I was wondering if anyone had other suggestions? I was interested in the BALL BEARING setups since that is the newer technology.

I was hoping for high 11's. Here are the parts I have for my new build:

3k stall, atr headers, ported l35's with large valves, rpm a/a, meth injection, a custom cam a little larger than the 422, nitrided stock crank, 1.6 roller rockers, ATR downpipe, 58mm throttle body, ported intakes, h-beams, je pistons, ect ect but thats the main idea.

The only thing is on RPM's site he says to use a RPM or PTE downpipe with the pte63 ... and I just purchased a NEW atr downpipe.....can I still use the ATR one?

Thanks for your time and suggestions :) ---

I don't think the ATR DP is going to work. I may have somthing that will help you out though if you want to go PTE. PM me your phone # and I will call you on my dime

PM sent :) . Good thing I didnt send out that ATR dp for jethot coating!!! ---

EDIT: After searching looks like I will be going with the RPM downpipe....his site says it works great with the ATR headers ---

did you check out www.turbotime.us ? there's a bunch of good turbo dp combos on there as well if I remember right.. and if your going with a whole new turbo/dp setup why not just jump in with both feet and get the BB option now

Thats what I am thinking of doing, just going BB now. The only thing is I need to start researching again. I was pretty much setting my combo up around this pte63, and anything bigger will start to cause clearance issues with the headers :). What a good BB turbo equivelant to the pte63? ---

Hey Thanks bro. Were you in the 11's?

He just emailed me and said "you can use the atr downpipe, but you will just have to slot 2 of the holes in the flange about 1/8"."

So now the question is will I gain or lose anything going to the SYTY specific housing vs using the GN turbo I already have (and investing $300 to rebuild it)? The only thing I can think of is I wont need to use the 3 to 4 spacer, so it will put less stress on the headers, BUT the length between the turbo and header may actually be beneficial in airflow?

Is it harder to fit everything using the spacer or maybe even easier? ---THANKS ---

11's :rotf: a stock turbo has runs 11's. Seriously anything in the PTE SyTy Catalog of Turbo's can run 11's with the right tuning. I don't know about the clearance issues with bigger turbos. You should be thinking atleast low 11's if not 10's with a 63 and your mods.

SWEET, hahah I just dont like to put my goal time TOO low , then be disappointed when I dont hit the time I want :) . I appreciate your 2 cents!!! Your getting me pumped up ;) ---

EDIT: Ok I think I want to go with the SYTY specific pte63 to eliminate the leaky spacer, the ATR downpipe and ATR headers, and my 42mm ProGate ext Wastegate. Will I have any problems running these parts without modification to anything? Thanks ---

Re: Thinking of using a different turbo....help me!!! ---

I still havent figured out if it is worth the extra $200 to get a NEW SY specific pte63 or to get my GN pte63 rebuilt and save the money?

The Sy 63 is a .85 a/r on the exhaust flange, and the GN is a .63 a/r on the exhaust flange. Would the smaller a/r help with the spool or just hurt me in the flow department costing me hp? Whats your opinions? Thanks ---

The .63 housing is a little smallish and won't have the top end on our 4.3's but works well on smaller engines (Buick 3.8L) and would give you a little better low end, it would be better than stock by all means but there are better turbos available now and the PTE 63 is getting a little dated but still a good turbo. Our trucks have plenty low end already and need help mid-range & top end. That's where a stock Sy Ty starts to "lay down".

I was running a turbo the Mike Lee put together for me, something like a T72 that cleared everything.
.70 A/R compressor cover with 4" inlet & 2.5" outlet & PTE exhaust housing. It's something along the lines of the PTE "Stealth" turbo.

It is the turbo on the left in these pics: http://new.photos.yahoo.com/rbippus@sbcglobal.net/album/576460762397385170

What is the turbo on the right? lol
