Starting my GT

Trying to get the new motor in the GT fired up. Crank it over, get a few pops and nothing else. Check for fuel, find none. Fix that (pump harness was loose), try again, same results. checked plug wires for proper orientation and routing about 7 times, disconnected the timing set connector (manually set to roughly 0 - 2 * , haven't gotten a light on it yet). Still no dice. Turns out, I'm only holding about 22psi of FP. According to the manual, the poppet injectors on the CMPI system need 45 - 50 psi to open. The truck ran fine 2 months ago (evidently had enough FP) when I pulled the injector / regulator, and stored them in a clean and safe place, then reinstall and now this. Any idea as to what could be causing the low FP? Is it possibly my pump isn't getting a good enough ground (after I POR-15'd) ?

Re: Starting my GT

Thought about 180 off, so I swapped the wires around (it will run badly like that, but will run) and no dice.

Today, replaced fuel filter, did some more testing on the pump, checked all the pump grounds and voltage, did the check the manual lists for the regulator (clamp it shut and watch pressure). Even with the return line clamped about 98% off, wouldn't build over 22 psi pressure. I have a bad feeling it is the pump... I just hope I can get it out without breaking the lines or the top of the tank.

Yeah I would say bad pump or the cpi unit has a pretty good leak in it. Probably pump though.

Checked that too... pulled the manifold baffle out and ran the pump via test circuit while wathcing the CPI unit... no leaks that are visible, and I figured for that much fuel there would have to be a lot of gas going someplace.

Going to swap the pump next, then try swapping the CPI unit for another one I have from my spare manifold. hopefully between those I'll find a cure

could it possible be the something you did with the intake mods

Can't imagine so, the truck ran with the new LT1 setup on it before I ripped the old engine apart (I use ran loosely  )

Take the bed off!! to get to the pump. It make life very very easy! 6 bolts for the bed and 4 for the bumper 2 grounds and 2 wire hold downs and if is off.
Just did it, twice once to change the Pump and once to change the Tank. Long story but very easy
Good luck

Haven't seen the truck recently eh

I am hoping that when I get back home I can get the pump out without damaging anything, but more than likely I'm buying a new sending unit as well because I don't think this one will come out in one piece.

Well there's your problem. Your bed is on upside down

It will be right side up again soon enough. Hopefully I'll be sorting all this mechanical stuff out this coming weekend (I have roughly 16 hours ;) ), then getting it slapped back together and primed shortly thereafter.

Bought a fuel pump (standard ACDelco) and a new locking ring for the tank. Any old fuel pump pros with suggestions on how to get the regulator out without damaging it?

Re: Starting my GT

Damaging it is never a problem here, but then again, we don't have rust...

Do I have to attach a rust qualifier to everything I say  ? ... yeah it's rusty, I'm just hoping I can get the ring seperated without damaging the sending unit

Also got the timing light on, it's firing about at about 6* of retard right now, going to advance it a some before I try again

I'm just saying is all. Rust there < *.

You need to move out here. Then you won't have these problems

I would like to live somewhere without rust, but I don't think I can give up New England.

Although, that ebay auction for the Ty, Sy and the brodix bowtie motor is making me think about Cali :rotf:
