A while back some one posted that they had their stock alternator rebuilt by a shop to 130 - 140 amps for like $80 (if I remember correct). Who was it, di dit turn out ok / any problems (read still running) and what is the contact info for the shop that did it? I need to do a rebuild and don't need a 200 amp. and will not buy anoter Powermaster.

As always, thanks!

I don't think I made that post, but I had my stocker rebuilt locally w/ great results. They upgraded it to 140A recently & also put in the larger case bearings. Was more than $80, but I don't remember exactly how much. I'd do it again, esp. considering the probs I keep reading ppl have w/ the Powermasters.

I would defiantly recommend just going to a couple starter/alt shops and see what they would charge. It is very safe to upgrade to 140 my dad has been doing it for years. Also another good idea is to upgrade the case so it has the larger bearing as the small bearing tend to burn up and lock the alt up.
FYI I will never buy a powermaster alt after hearing all the stories of problems, it really sucks that billet specialties uses powermaster so I ended up with one on my sy. I took it right out of the box and gave it to my dad. The one I got it a 100a one wire with side terminal and costs like $250 on summit, my dad said it had the cheapest parts in it that you could buy and he was even thinking it almost looked like the one housing wasn't even brand new. For that money it should be the best of the best.

Good luck with your search just don't get a powermaster.

Glad I read all this. I was going to buy a powermaster for mine. It tries to die when the volvo fan kicks on.

Funny Thing is i can o0nly run a powermaster 200 amp alternator on my truck. I tried a 140 and it won't even keep the headlights bright. They will burn up in a 1-2 years becasue there is so much draw on it that i need that much amperage. So just to say i don't thing they are a bad company and if you had one, i was also told by powermaster i could send my old one back and they would rebuilt it for me at lower cost. You can not make a smaller unit put out 200 i have tried it and the alternator shop says no problem but it doesn't work.

No problem Ralph and your opinions and comments are ALWAYS WELCOME!! I used to sell Powermaster and we just had too many problems and unhappy customers.Warranty was fine, and many, many of them were replaced. That was the problem though, too many of them had to be replaced. I know some one has to have good luck with them or they would be gone by now but I had enough problems that I didn't want the black eye with my customers any more.

I just need a good "warmed over" replacement for the stocker is all. No big stereo ..... yet.

I bought one from a local starter/alt shop. He had built it for a snow plow truck and the person never came back to get it. I was told its a 180 amp unit. It work great for the year the truck was running with it in use.

Re: Stock Alt. Rebuilt to 130+ Amps??

just on the subject of reman alts, when i was a ford mech and we had a bad alt, we would order 2 or 3 just in case and we woud normally get a service part replacement time on every alt. maybe it was because they were built in mexico......you get what you pay for i guess..... but this was the warranty parts not customer pay parts. so i guess with what i have seen, alts are kinda a hit or miss when they are not new.
