rear drums vs disks

i was planning on doing a rear disk conversion soon but it got me thinking: Is it worth the extra weight and rotations mass of disk brakes over a set of aluminum drums with upgraded cylinders? which will give me better brake boosting?

I'm not really sure that it is worth the discs on a Sy because you have so little rear braking traction. Also, they say that drums hold better for launches

Drums hands down will do a better job of holding boost while braking ( more surface area ). On a side note disc setups do a better job of disapating heat and have less parts to them that is why most vehicals today are going to rear disc.

IMO if you're not running hudge open wheels were as you can see the brake setup, then stay drum. Upgrade your shoes, cylinders, drums, and go hydro boost instead.

To add to that list use the CBR kit and upgrade your fronts and then you should be able to put your head through the windsheild with ease any time you want and hold just about as much boost as your truck could make.

You could go get a Hayne's or Chilton's manuel they should have the whole breakdown of how to redo rear breaks.

The most important thing to remember for anyone who is new to rear drum brakes is only take apart one side at a time. Then you can always go back to the other side if you forget how something goes since it's a mirror image.

Don't forget to pick up a hardware kit if you're replacing shoes, no sense in trying to re-use old stuff

Sorry to bring this to the top, but are most people sticking with their drums???

I'm still debating if I should go with LS1 rear disks to match the LS1 fronts I'm doing but it sounds like drums hold better for launching.

If you are running rear disks, how many lbs of boost can you hold while launching?

Re: rear drums vs disks

i am running a set of www.tsmmfg.com rear disc set up on both my syclone and my 92 4dr 2wd blazer. stops so much better. looks alot better than drums. i have done alot of boost launchs with disc set up. it holds my truck fine. stock truck. no major mods. 8lb,10lb,12lb lauchs. she dont creep at all on me.

Re: rear drums vs disks

I believe 4 wheel disk is the only way to go. Especially for a daily driver.

Now if your building a track only truck and want to kep it simple and run 15" wheels, then you can rebuild the stock drums and be just fine.

Also, the SyTy all use the same stock brakes as all other 1st gen S-series/T-series trucks.

Re: rear drums vs disks

Ive always read that you can upgrade drum brakes by buying two sets of shoes. Drum brakes use a longer shoe on the rear than they do on the front. Not front wheel and rear wheel, but the front and rear of the rear wheels. If you buy two sets you can install all four long shoes for more surface area.

yes you can, I use both large shoes, 7/8 cylinder, and aluminum drums. my truck does not creep.

Re: rear drums vs disks

I upgraded my cylinders to 7/8 and rebuilt them with large shoes, but I still don't know where to get the aluminum drums. Anyone? I'd buy a set off someone if they were willing to sell. How much weight is lost by doing this?

From what I understand, you can't buy aluminum drums anymore. I think I was reading somewhere that if you ordered a set for a vehical that came with aluminum drums, you'll get cast steel ones.

So your only resource then would be a wrecking yard or something like that. There was someone on here who a couple sets for sale a while back, but I couldn't find the thread ( must have purged itself )

According to Phil's post here aluminum drums have a weight saving of 9 lbs each.

There was a Camaro that came in work the other day and I was very tempted to trade out their aluminum drums for a set of cast ones I have laying around :)
