a bad abs unit would cause the brakes to fail.
you can try resetting the abs unit - this will clear out the codes stored in the unit and make the light go off. if it returns, see what code its throwing.

I've never had that problem and I had my abs light come on and go off a shit load.. until the abs module finally decided to stop working all together one day which left me with small amounts of stopping power.

Did you resolve this? Today I had both the ABS and the Brake light come on at the same time. I was able to push the brake pedal to the floor with only minimal stopping power. I'm now re"search"ing my next step.

Get rid of the ABS unit, they are junk and never worked correctly, lucky us to get the prototype's in our trucks.
