Manifold Xover pipe prob

Well, I went to change oil on the Sy for the first time yesterday, so while I was underneath I decided to take a microscope and look for probs. Well, I didn't need a microscope to see this one...

When the shop did the resto on the Sy and were re-assembling, they overtightened one of the stud bolts on the passenger's side exhaust manifold-to-crossover flange, with the wonderful result of breaking the stud off in the manifold! :( :(

They used really nice stainless hardware but just snapped one. Of course, with the other nut not having any pressure on it that nut came off and the flange clamp just slid down the pipe leaving that joint without a clamp - Arrggh. the clamp on the driver's side flange is tight and the crossover pipe is tight and doesn't appear to be leaking at the flange where the clamp is missing - that's just a matter of time.

So, do I just run the flange clamp back up and tighten the remaining stud nut, or do I pull the whole thing off and go with a Stage1 turbo while I've got the whole mess taken apart?? What are the odds of getting the broken stud out of the manifold? If it really is stainless it'll be a bear trying to drill it out for an easy-out.

Re: Manifold Xover pipe prob

take the crossover off, and try welding a nut onto it, they normally aren't that tight.

Looks like it broke off right below the surface of the flange.. that's on the exhaust manifold side.... Hmmmm

you don't need to take your manifold off, just take the crossover off, so you can acces the broken stud.

Thanks Bezerk! I see what you're saying... use a nut that is just a little smaller ID than the stud, weld the interior of the nut to the stud, then extract! ... now I just need to find someone with a welder (that knows how to use it!).

Thanks for the tip!

Re: Manifold Xover pipe prob

you can also try to use 2 nuts. so you lock it up, and than take it out, they normally aren't that tight

The thread on the flange is tapped all the way thru. If you can't get it out simple drill it out and tap it to the next size larger and your ready to go.
