I sawed off the bar and the rear is still stuck to the member but if i remember the member i still dont see how it's going to come out? Any ideas aside from chopping up the member?

Re: Torsion bar removal problem..

yea, they get froze up pretty good. warm it up with the torch and pound it thru.

one time on a jimmy I had to slice it with a cut off wheel and then use the torsion bar compressing tool to push the adjuster until it snapped but you cut the torsion bar so you cant do that.

There was a time when astro vans were rolling or should I say dragging into the shop with broken bars left and right ,its not fun getting them out when they are rusted up,enjoy!

Re: Torsion bar removal problem..

So your saying that by heating up that rusted adjuster peice somehow it will allow the rest of the torsion bar to slide forward? I've tried pounding on that rusted peice where the hole is and it does nothing :p

I'm not quite sure how pounding on the lil circle rusted part is going to help any... I mean it looks like a square peg in a round hole :p

Re: Torsion bar removal problem..

OK try this. Make sure your torsion bar mount is bolt back together (the rubber mounts). Get someone to wedge/pry the pork chop forward so it not rest against the back of the bar. The key is to make sure its solid and the torsion bar is un impeded to being push rear ward. Use a sledge hammer (where you cut it) to push the torsion bar further in and break the corosion. Once it slides back you can pull it out. I hope this is clear enough to follow..

Re: Torsion bar removal problem..

Personally, I would guess if you hacked the bars you're going coilover... so just chop the crossmember

Mine torsion bars are still stuck in the pork chops inside the crossmembers... they were stuck in the A-arms too but I chucked those

Sometimes its easier just to pull the parts apart rather than cutting everything ;)

put the punch in that hole and pound it forward.thats how its supposed to come out.it would also help it the cross member was bolted in.4lb hammer should do the trick :rotf:

After pounding it in to break the corrosion and then pounding out it worked! Thanks!
