Re: Adjusting Shift Cable

Well, I think I found my problem.

I got the truck onto stands and got underneath to check it out. The bracket that was holding the cable away from the drive shaft was almost totally free. It was actually being held in place by the cable. The two bolts holding it in were loose and had almost come out of the tranny pan.

I tightened them up and checked all the others on the tranny pan and they were really loose as well, so everything got torqued up. I think that explains my leak as well, as the tranny fluid was way low.

I got back in the truck and the pin now locks in park and all of the gear selections are sweet!

T|he ticking noise has gone as well, so it is all good news. Phew!

I am now wondering if any damage has been done as this had happened over the last 6 months. I haven't driven the car much but am now worried.....

Thanks for your help George!

Disconnect the shifter cable from the trans.
Move the little arm on the trans as far forward as you can. That is park.
What will happen, is the rear ring gear will have to rotate a bit for the parking pawl to engage.
This is seen easily with the pan removed.
If you are going into park when you do it manually with the cable removed, then you need to find out if the cable, the bracket or something on the inside of the truck is damaged.
I sell a complete replacement kit for the cable and that thread has many pics in it you can use for reference:
