Well, I think I found my problem.
I got the truck onto stands and got underneath to check it out. The bracket that was holding the cable away from the drive shaft was almost totally free. It was actually being held in place by the cable. The two bolts holding it in were loose and had almost come out of the tranny pan.
I tightened them up and checked all the others on the tranny pan and they were really loose as well, so everything got torqued up. I think that explains my leak as well, as the tranny fluid was way low.
I got back in the truck and the pin now locks in park and all of the gear selections are sweet!
T|he ticking noise has gone as well, so it is all good news. Phew!
I am now wondering if any damage has been done as this had happened over the last 6 months. I haven't driven the car much but am now worried.....
