I understand the top with the in and out, but what is the port on the bottom do?
most likely a fitting for a oil drain hose, back to the oil pan, or the street - whichever you prefer :D

Re: new oil separator for pcv

couple of newbie questions...

1) does the oil comming to the intake through the PCV system cause some knock retard due to heat and/or the fact that its oil and lowers the octane rating of the mixture ?

or

2) do these engines blow that much oil to worry about or is the oil in the can just an indicator of weak rings or weak valve seals ?

inquiring minds need to know lol

Re: new oil separator for pcv

most people just don't like to shoot oil through the turbo/ic/intakes just to keep them clean. Added guard for a blown pcv valve doesn't suck either.

if you don't have a can you will get oil in the intake. if left alone it will build up in your chambers (= higher compression = knock) not to mention the iac, tb and inside the intakes will be naaasty. it's not anywhere near enough to affect the mixture/octane.

Re: new oil separator for pcv

Help me out here please!!!!!!!!!!! It is my understanding that the pcv valve that goes to the Trottle body is sucking out the excess pressure when the truck is not under boost, then when you are under boost the other pcv opens (if connected before the turbo) and draws that same pressure out of the valve cover.

Im a right so far?

If this is correct, why couldnt you just have it always suck from the pre turbo port?

in looking at the modified catch can here i began to wonder, if the hose comes out of the valve cover to the can (it has a pcv valve) then a line goes from the can to the pre turbo port ( another pcv valve) wouldnt the pressure in the cover keep the fisrt pcv valve closed?

Next, coouldnt you just get rid of the pcv all together with this can? a line to the can to one of the connections provided when the can was bought, then another line to the pre turbo port. it is always under vaccum unless the truck is turned off, so maybe a pcv valve just to keep things from going back into the lines when the truck isnt running.

Maybe im just lost here. i bought an RPM A2a and will be installing some sort of catch can to keep oil from getting into the cooler core, but know that im thinking about the more i wonder if my thinking is all wrong.

It might work but if you notice the PCV goes in behind the throttle blades IIRC. This way you still get a decent amount of vac when the throttle is closed (idle).

I think most don't run the line before the turbo because they don't want it to suck out any more air than it absolutely has to. The catch can will get a lot, but it may not always get everything.

Your understanding of the system is correct tho, better than most that post on the subject.

x2. Even with the can I still get oil through the PCV valve and into the TB. A nicer catch can with baffles like the Moroso can designed for a vacuum pump would probably fix that. My truck also has oil smoke come through the steering column via the driver side breather.

The setup I have would probably be just fine for a vehicle with less blow by.

I would think the ones with filters inline would be more effective at catching the most oil. I had one on my 5.0 and it worked great. I could change the filter every couple months and drain the oil once a month. It costs $10 from Home Depot/Lowes, it's small, clear with black plastic, it's it the tools/air compressor section! ;)

That's where I got both of mine at. One for each hose.

Sweet. Do you have pics on where yours are mounted? I'm trying to decide where to locate mine exactly and keep it looking less cluttered in the engine compartment.

I'm using them with the LS1, so the locations are going to be a bit different.

If I was doing a stock SyTy motor however, I would probably mount one near the firewall to keep the hose runs short. Maybe fab up a way to attack it to the EGR blockoff plate or just use the plate screws to hold it there.

I would put the other one for the boost vaccuum near the fenderwell or on the fender itself. If you have an ATR cool air box you could attach it to the outside of that. Maybe even cut a new hole in the box and run the line inside to the filter there so you don't have lines running all over.

Those are some great ideas. I'm building a custom cold air box and I will try to work your idea for mouting it into the design. Thanks.
