Ultimate Chip Questions

I recently purchased an STG Ultimate Stock chip from one of the members here on the board. I purchased what I believe is a three bar map sensor from Race Proven Motors. I installed them both in the same setting and have been running this setup for about a week. I am running the T1 16 setting. The truck now runs extremely rich and looks like a dieseil (sp) with the amount of black smoke that comes out under acceleration. It also idles like crap and has stalled a couple of times. Also, my gas mileage has dropped dramatically and it seems to be loading up on me under start up. I asked the owner of the chip if this is the what I should expect and he said no, and to double check the map sensor, I had done a search before but my map sensor does not appear to be a gm part in that there is nothing marked GM on it and the part number does not match what was listed as a GM part number, but the number on the map sensor does not match the part number on the stock 2 bar. I have no tuning experience with this truck and have no real ability to tune, but am really dissappointed and worried and am thinking about pulling the whole thing out. What else can I look at and do to check on this combination? How safe is it to run this setup? Will I wash piston rings out if it is running this rich? Could it be something else, like a fuel injector or a fuel pump? When I did this upgrade I did add some Lucas Fuel injector cleaner at the same time. As for one positive note, I used to have an overboost condition becasue of no CAT, but that problem is gone. Thanks alot, I really don't want to do any damage to my truck, but I have spent alot of money to get a little better performance.

Re: Ultimate Chip Questions

1. Where do you live?

2. Do you have an aftermarket adjustable fuel pressure regulator? If the answer is "yes", what is your FP set at with the vacuum line disconnected?

3. Are you using the stock fuel pump, or do you have an aftermarket fuel pump installed?

Re: Ultimate Chip Questions

With regards to MAP sensors:

"MAP sensors, stock 2 bar on left #16009886 and 3 bar on right old number is #16040749 new # is #12223861. On the topside where the plug connects, there is a number for identification. 1 bar MAP=039, 460, 876 or 883. 2 bar MAP=012, 539, 609, 701, or 886. 3 bar MAP=749 or 861. The 4 digit number to the right refers to the date of manufacture "1100"= 2001, 100th day of the year."

You can order a Walbro fuel pump from Ron Gregory in Garland , TX here. He has been selling Walbro fuel pumps, IC pumps and boost gauge fittings for these trucks years before I got mine. You can also order Phil Chiver's safety loops and hood prop eliminator kits from him too.

TY0279.
1. I live in Carthage, Illinois

2. Yes, I have one, but it is not installed as of yet.

3.I was told it was an aftermarket fuel pump by the previous owner. A walbro, but I am not sure of the size.

SY2932, thanks for the info, I will pull it back off tomorrow and look at it. Do you think that could be the problem? I don't think Race Proven even has a two bar map sensor on there web page. Why would anybody order one, unless they were taking it back to stock.

Again, my concern is any potential damage I could do to the truck running it in this state. Should I be concerned about washing a ring out? Thanks for all your ideas, I can really use your input.

Re: Ultimate Chip Questions

Make sure that you follow the installation instructions here to a "T". The folks that have botched up installing chips over the years never ceases to amaze me... I have lost count of all the times an Ultimate chip was installed incorrectly and the owner cried that the chip was bad when it was improperly installed. It is VERY easy bend/break a pin if you aren't careful.

If you have another vehicle to drive, by all means park the truck until you get it running right. Getting into boost with a truck that isn't running right is just asking for more serious problems.

Re: Ultimate Chip Questions

Sy2932,

I believe that I did install the chip correctly. I printed those very same instructions up when I installed the chip. I will retrace my steps and look at it again. I appreciate your thoughts. I will check this all again tomorrow. Assuming that everything is correct, what would be your next step? While I have it out, if everything looks good, should I switch the chip and map sensor back to see if the truck runs better? Thanks again.

I don't think the map sensor is the problem.

You should install the AFPR before using the Ultimate and 3-bar. With the AFPR, Ultimate, and 3-bar installed you'll want to start with a fuel pressure of 45lbs - 50lbs with the vacuum line disconnected.

Ok, I pulled the chip and its part number is 12223861. So it is a 3 bar map sensor. I will try to get the fuel pressure regulator installed today.

Re: Ultimate Chip Questions

Ok the afpr is in and the fuel pressure was at 43 lbs. I bumped it to 46 lbs and will see if it is still smoking tomorrow on the way to work. Thanks guys for your help. I report what I find out.

The information that I have said to set fuel press at 50 lbs. And it may a big diff in truck performance.

Re: Ultimate Chip Questions

if it is rich, higher fuel pressure is not the answer I think.

EEPROM reversal into limp home mode?
