Any shops specialized with engine swaps for the Typhoon? Live in San Jose area looking to restore a blown motor on a Typhoon. Any ideas? I'd appreciate any help.

Around here I think we're all having to become our own pros. I've been told a shop in Campbell has done a significant amount of work. Possibly called Campbell Automotive (but not the same one as the vender here). If nobody else has their info handy, I can probably find it. What kinda motor build are you wanting to do?

call mike at RPM up, or tow it down to him, in LA. there aren't many reputable shops that specialize in SyTy's. remember, steven, tom campbell build ty(not the canadians) blew up, so he went with RPM.

ooohh, i didn't know that. but i guess the whole picture makes a lot more sense now. so yeah, pretty much buy a motor and put it in yourself, or send it to mike and have it done.

I just want to make this Ty as stock as possible. With a budget that won't break my pockets too much. What would you suggest?

I'd probably suggest selling your truck, haha. I don't know, a stock-like motor will probably cost you around 5k if I had to guess. RPM is still probably the way to go.

budget is obsolete on these trucks. i've spent 10K on just the engine!:shoot:

Re: Engine Pros in the Bay Area?

I spent 6k and have yet to touch the engine. These things are money pits. If you are looking for a TY there are a few for sale that run and are fairly stock. Look at craigs list of in the clasified section. makes more sense to pay more for a running truck.

Re: Engine Pros in the Bay Area?

OK guys, I get the point that this is going to be quite spendy. Let's not assume all the negative. I know how projects go, I've got an Old skool that ain't worth talking about how much $$$ I've spent. So what should I build for this Ty. Can you go with something reasonable and reliable with say 8k? I mean I'm trying to pay this whole project off after trading my car, I'm done with payments.

i just dont understand why you want to do a stock build as a project car.

yes, you just have to source the parts.
Alright, now what choices should I make. There's a 4.3 block and an original that comes with it. They are both complete but the 4.3 from the blazer is already stripped to the core and he was going to rebuild that from scratch. So what do most guys put into these things, I mean stock isn't fast for anyone were guys. But what am I going to be happy with. I just like the car how it is. Another idea I've got is the Ty block on ebay that says its the original crate block, can I build this thing up? Give me some insight.

Re: Engine Pros in the Bay Area?

IMO,a stock motor is not even close to reliable.
"The 4.3L turbo engine uses most major components of the production LB4 engine.Standard production parts include the cylinder block(except bearing caps),camshaft, crankshaft, connecting rods, cylinder heads and valve train."1993 Typhoon Service Manual Supplement
That leaves the head gaskets and the pistons as the only changes, not enough.
Bought my Ty w/13,053 miles and found it was blown up twice before I got it.I work for a GM dealer so I pulled the motor for a reseal and found a disaster inside, with help from RPM I built what it sounds like your looking for, reliable, drivable, fast, fun and all for about $6K with the turbo and odds and ends.

Do you have a build sheet? Did you do the swap yourself or have the whole job done? How long does a complete build take? RPM seems to be a reputable shop. With all your recommendations they must be familiar with Ty engines and turbos or what?

Re: Engine Pros in the Bay Area?

I built the engine,RPM supplied all parts and machine work.
RPM sells a short block for about $5K,same parts I used on mine.I went a couple steps further and did the vortec swap and a turbo(stage 1).
I replaced all internal engine components from top to bottom, only thing factory in my engine bay is the block, intake and exhaust manifolds.
If you can build it yourself,do it,I got alot more for my money.
If not, call Mike at RPM.He'll help you figure out what your options are,and he has all the parts on the shelf.Good Luck.
