What to look for when buying a 93 Ty?

I tried searching for things such as "what to look for", but it kept saing that all 4 of those words (even when I use the double-quotes) are too common and were omitted. Therefore, I get no search results.

Can someone give me an idea of what to check for when looking at a '93 Typhoon? Truck reportedly has 59k miles on it, I'm looking at it tonight. What should I look out for? Or a link to a thread where this was already asked.

From my truck.... look for rust around rear window, bottoms of doors and front body mounts ... salt does bad things when they use crummy paint

THANKS.

I have noticed some rust on the tailgate around the rear window. I'll take a better look and test drive tonight.

Re: What to look for when buying a 93 Ty?

I know how that works, I have a '91 Galant.

It ran great, everything checked out per the Buyer's Guide (thanks again). The front bumper paint was flaking, and the rear bumper was shattered. The rest of the body was alright. He wanted more than I was willing to pay, but he's got my number. He hasn't received any other offers at all, so we'll see.

Also, the turbo sounded like a siren when it spooled up. The inspection sticker was expired and as soon as I took it for a drive I thought I heard a siren. "Great!" I thought, but it was just the turbo. Much different sound than my VR4. Is this typical?

Is it typical to hear a siren sound when you spool up not on a stock ty. What are the mods? It might have a BOV and intake and what ever else but not a siren sound on stock is not right.

Re: What to look for when buying a 93 Ty?

Pretty sure it was all stock aside from some cosmetic mods. It pulled hard but yeah, the turbo literally sounded like a police siren. Not quite as loud, but very noticeable. Maybe the turbo is going out. How hard is it to pull the intake pipe off the turbo inlet to check for shaft play? Is it easy to get to? (In case he calls me back) Maybe its the bearings in the turbo. What does a stock turbo usually go for on here? I think I saw one listed for $500. Yikes.

The tube that goes into the front of the turbo is very easy to take off. You just need a screwdriver. Does he have a K&N filter maybe he has a aftermarket intake that you just dont know. Have you seen a stock motor before. Maybe you are missing something. It just doesnt sound right. Mine is all stock and you cant hear anything but of course can feel the power of the turbo spooling up.

I don't see how an intake would make the turbo sound like that. The guy has had the car since 1996, he bought it with 10k miles. He isn't into modding at all. The turbo bearings theory is sounding about right.

I have driven in a few trucks that have NON stock intakes and they sound more meaner and more louder then stock. O well keep us posted on what you find.

Re: What to look for when buying a 93 Ty?

I got an offer from someone on the Galant board for a stock Ty turbo for "less than $500". :rotf: Thats what I get for saying that I saw one listed for $500. Is this about right? I don't even know if the guy is going to call me back and take my offer, anyways. I'm gonna stop racking my brain about this truck.

Ivanko had his for sale with 67k miles on it for like $200 I think. Check the for sale section around here.

I would stick your hand in there and see if the turbo has excessive endplay first to insure thats the problem. I'm sure I don't need to tell you to turn the motor off and wait a minute before you stick your hand in there though right :D :D????

Funny, I noticed that he (IVANKO) has a GVR4 too. I'll check with him, thanks for the lead.

No need to tell me, I've seen the carnage of a guys finger getting sucked into a turbo. Ouch.
