Hard starting.

3 times today my truck would not start on the first crank. Usualy it stats right up. Even on the 2nd crank it took a few seconds to start??? what could it be?? I hope it was just a fluke but last night I was venting some steam and I did drive it hard. Guessing I did something wrong. Also noticed an increase in injector tick. I adjusted one side of the rail. could a tight rail cause this??

Re: Hard starting.

I hope not. Its a new red top battery. It cranks hard but no start. I also smelt gas after it finaly started up. I have not touched anything since last weekend and it was running good then.

Re: Hard starting.

Maybe too much alky? Was the truck hot those times you started it? BTW, maybe change your sig. part that says spraying. Maybe say spraying alky. If I didn't know better I'd think you were on the bottle

Re: Hard starting.

Yeah it was hot. Could be the alky. I still have to mess with it. I jumped on it once getting on the freeway but the alky did not kick on. The red light came on but no green light?? Do you have to prime the pump every time you drive it. The instructions say to do it when you first install. Thanks Steven...Changed sig.

Re: Hard starting.

I have the same issue Gary, red light but rarely if ever the green. Weird. I still haven't figured it out. Haven't you done your fuel pump? I notice if you get too much alky in the system it bogs it big time. Did you spray a little while ideling before you shut the truck off last week? Could have been sittin in the system stankin things up. If the truck was hot, I hear a hot downpipe nukes the starter and makes it struggle. Maybe that thing's on its way out.

Re: Hard starting.

the fp was done before I bought it but I am thinking it was not done right. I also think my alt is on its way out. Can a alt. give good voltage but still go bad?

Re: Hard starting.

I changed the starter 5 months ago. 1996 454 one with the battery. it started fine when I left my house. Jump on it a few time. Light did not change. Got to his school. let it idle and yes I did force it to spray until it bogged down. Then I reved it up a few times a bit to clear it out. Shut it down . came back and it would not start. 3rd time it started. went to 7-11 to pick up kids Ice cream. It would not start again. went home.

I know when I was running rich my plugs fouled and i had a hard time starting on the first crank . How old are your plugs ?

Re: Hard starting.

new plugs. Just put them in saturday with the alky. My truck was running rich because my old plugs were all but one wet and smelt like fuel. I turned down the fp a bit and lowered the phill chip setting for the alky. The wbo2 idles at 13-14. wot around 10.5-11 while spraying. and 14-15 while crusing on the highway. If it does it again tomorow I will pull the plugs. I also got a little miss again but its not that bad. If I get on the gas a few times the miss stops. Again it sounds to me like I rich. before anyone asks the injectors are new too. Could be the rail to tight?? or bad FP?? AFPR is new too. Could alky foul plugs? first two night I ran it it was very fast. It still is but just is starting funny. WOT is out of control. Having a hard time making more then 4-5lbs on boost launch. How does the sharpness control on the boost controler work.?

Re: Hard starting.

If the plugs are new and this problem is new I would say the 2 may be related , did you change the gap at all when you swapped them , or did you just replace them ?

Re: Hard starting.

I gapped down for the alky. It started fine about 10 times with the new plugs. I used to start hard a few times a while back but when I put the phill chip, map, injectors, and tune up it stopped. Could the cap/rotor cause it. I bought autozones best cap/rotor but it looks burnt up already and it only has 1000k miles on it.

Re: Hard starting.

Could be unrelated but hard/delayed starts are a common indication that the fuel pump relay is on it's way out. After you crank the engine long enough to build oil pressure, the truck will start. The fuel pump relay is the one closest to the fender on the driver's side of the truck. That is it on the left side of the pic below:

The AC relay is next to it. They are interchangeable so you can disconnect the plugs and plug the fuel pump relay plug into the AC relay without *too* much trouble. The relays are held on the firewall with a bracket by two 9/32" screws. Removing the bracket will make it easier to disconnect the plugs which are held by a single locking tab that is pushed towards the fender to remove the plug.

Re: Hard starting.

:2cents: Hard starting, to me, based on your symptoms, is fuel. Did I miss a FP gauge in your sig? You should see normal, 40# or whatever, when you turn the key on. If not then the FP is waiting for oil pressure to activate. The fuel rail should be down snug on the injs, just holding them in place. If you had a stuck inj it would flood that cyl but not necessarily stop it from starting. If it runs/pulls OK after starting then ign is prolly OK. Alky shouldn't have a bearing on start-up unless you primed it to the point of dieing. Was the fuel smell on startup accompanied by black smoke? That's over rich. Fuel smell by itself might be a leak. If it's cranking hard and just not starting then it's not the bat or starter. :2cents:

Just some points to ponder.

Re: Hard starting.

Thanks guys. You all gave me some good ideas. I am in the middle of buying another house and moving fast. Nothing like looking, buying, and moving in 2 months. (long story) So I am too tired to think about my truck. Thanks for thinking for me.
I will swap the relays. I remember that from reading somewhere but it slipped my mind.
Don, I just need you to touch my truck again.LOL Fuel is set at 38. It runs ritch at 40#'s. For some reason my truck idles better at lower fp but it knocks at wot with a lower FP. 38 is a good compromise. I have not check the FP now at startup. Good thing to check. Thanks Don.

Gremlins???? YES this truck has always had a few. It does weird things sometimes. It will idle funny but haul ass. Just my truck, like me not always 100% there. :) But thats why I love my SY!
