DataMaster Tuning

Aeroking

e.i.
I'm picking up a Syclone this weekend, the current owner said that the truck need to be tuned. It has

GM Crate Vortec 4.3L about 2k miles on it.
Stock Sy intake & plenum
Stock Sy turbo and intercooler assembly
A/C Delete
walbro 255 pump
Boost Controller
Brian Green Chip
3" exhaust

Now i have Datamaster and cables on my laptop. He has the boost controller turned all the way down as not to hurt the new motor. The WG just dumps all the boost when the turbo spools up.

I will be driving the truck home at low speeds, when i test drove the truck it ran fine, and built up boost pretty quickly, but again dumped it.

With the Datamaster, can I tune the truck? and if i can does someone have a STOCK log file that i can load and set all the parameters for a stock Sy setup???

Re: DataMaster Tuning

datamaster just tells you what is going on.. it doesn't allow any tuning.. it just gives you information..

you need to take that information and figure out what to do with it.

Re: DataMaster Tuning

If be tuning you meen change things in the chip with dm no you cant all you can do with dm is log a run and go back and look at it. Also most will sy the gm crate 4.3 will not be as strong as a syty 4.3

But most would say you couldnt run 28 psi through the stock motor.

I predict you will have issues, and a short engine life span.

would i need a program like HP Tuner, or what, or do i have to have it dyno tuned?

it all depends you can go with an ultimate chip, or have someone write a custom chip for you.. or wait for the $59 code or wahtever it is to be public.. lots of options.

is a Brian Green chip the same as an Ultimate Chip. Heres a pic of the inside

the chip display is below the radio, the other is the boost controller

Re: DataMaster Tuning

yes that looks like an ultimate chip.. bg did write the software (I think)..

so you should concentrate on setting the timing right, making sure you have your plugs gapped properly, and using datamaster to make sure you have zero degrees of knock.

what can i do to a vortec 4.3 to make it comperable to the SyTy 4.3?

Change the main caps, and pistons for the correct type or stronger aftermarket. Reduce the compression to the proper amount.

Re: DataMaster Tuning

its gonna sit from now till next may, so i have plenty of time to get it right before next summer, but mains and pistons is what i need huh. Forged? like a nice set of eagles?

Re: DataMaster Tuning

I'd suggest eagle rods, 4 bolt splayed caps, and forged pistons (TRW or JE's)

The crate motor will have cast pistons, higher compression and cast main caps. The cast pistons being the most fragile, followed by the weak mains.

Re: DataMaster Tuning

great, now correct me if i'm wrong but, 4.3 vortecs have 9.4 to 1, and SyTy 4.3 have 8.3 to 1 comp ratios?

Re: DataMaster Tuning

so wait, you bought a ty with a regular 4.3 in it? and now your trying to make it into a turbo 4.3?

I think what he was saying is that the motor was replaced with a GM crate motor but all the other syty was put back on like it was originaly. (before he bought it) probably why the guy has the WG set to not allow much boost! MY :2cents:

Re: DataMaster Tuning

i made a deal but i havent purchased it yet.

its a low mileage clean Sy for bluebook
it has a GM crate Vortec 4.3L block, heads, pistons, cam, crank, everything
it has the stock Sy Turbo, intake, plenum, intercooler etc.

the motor has less than 2k miles on it.

how much of a job is it to pull the motor? so that i can swap pistons, rods, and caps

Re: DataMaster Tuning

Is this replacement motor a balance shaft? In my eyes that gives the truck a bad mark. I personally would rather buy a nice clean sy with blown motor, than 1 with GM replacment. GM hasn't made a good motor for our trucks YET. And I personally include the stockers in with that statement. The replacement motor you have is even worse than that.

Here is how renz pulled his motor. You dont' need to go that far, but 1st timer I would say 10hrs or more to remove it.
