Want some advice

I blew up my motor ie. #2 cyl piston top broke and #2 main cap broke in half. Yeh it sucks but what ya gonna do right? Way too much detination for way too long I guess. Anyways I was thinking of saving some $ and just replacing the bad piston instead of buying 6 new ones (they are TRW Forged) has anyone done this/heard of this before? Also are the TRW's more or less prone to detination than any other piston? I have searched all over the place and can't find an answer. If say the JE's are better than the TRW's for less detination then I will get off my wallet and buy them, but if there isn't any proven answer then I will stay with the TRW's

Thanks for the advice

Re: Want some advice

JE should be stronger than TRW, its probably not much if even measurable imune to causing detonation. You shouldn't be cracking main cap and breaking forged pistons. I imagine your detonation has to be audible to do that.

You need to fix the real problem, detonation.

Re: Want some advice

When I first got it stupid me was running 87 octaine gas and wondering what that wierd noise was  drove it like that for quite a while before finding out. and now I'm paying :rotf:

Re: Want some advice

impressive destruction, but i've drove my in 87 on long road trips and was real gentle w/ it and it did fine

Re: Want some advice

Yeh unfortuanatly when I got it I wasn't all about driving nice :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:
But seriously I have TRW piston #L2403N and I've searched the internet all night and I can't find any info on them. Are these the "turbo pistons" that everyone is talking about or are they just regular old forged pistons?

Re: Want some advice

I wonder if that part number is different because it's a totally different piston, or if it is just a later/newer version of the ones I have? Do you have a picture of that piston?

Re: Want some advice

Searching for a few minutes gave me the resultsL2403n is a stock 4.3 piston. look
The l2441 has a d cup design. Now look at this

I'm of the mind that the TRW is a *better* piston - it's heavier, and has a good amount of material around the ring lands.

I haven't seen a TRW break that wasn't due to a catastrophic engine failure, which would have killed any piston that you'd put in.

Only knock against them is that you really need to shave the block/heads a bit to get the compression up to what stock was.

Deto resistance will be more of a function of the heads. JE, SRP, TRW are all dished pistons (if you're buying blower slugs, anyway), and the crown shape isn't significantly different. The only one that I know of doing anything in that area is Endyn.

You won't regret buying the TRWs.

Re: Want some advice

Thanks for the advise guys, well it looks like I'm gonna have to go with 6 new ones anyways because I don't think TRW makes the L2403N anymore! Or I should say I can't find them on Summit or Jeggs. I was just going to try to save a couple hundred $$ which would have been nice to spend on the Vortecs I'm using.

Re: Want some advice

:2cents: I have replaced one piston in my motor before (twice actually) most recently due to a vacuum line failure on the map sensor where the truck made 20psi and the map told the computer it made 10psi. must have split as i was spooling to launch, and it took less than 60ft and only maybe 2 seconds of detonation to crack number 5 piston and drop all compression. I have je's, and one piston cost me about $70 shipped.

as long as it didnt hurt the cylinder walls, there is no problem. quick hone down the cylinder and a new set of rings (gotta love buying rings for a v8 and having 2 cylinders worth of spares  ) :2cents:

Re: Want some advice

No wonder now why they dont take much nitrous to break, hypers are worst than cast when it comes to no2 detonation.
