Quick respond to firing order

I'm in the process of doing a tune up on my car and I have everything done and followed the firing order for the cap off of the sytyarchives website which is from the top (between screws) clockwise : 3,2,1,6,5,4..........but that was wrong, the car wouldn't even start it just made a loud pop. So I got the old distributor out and it was numbered from the top clockwise as: 1,2,3,4,5,6....so I did that and the car starts, but shakes really bad, so I'm guessing I'm one off still....Anyone know the correct firing order?

That doesn't seem right though, because it's the same as off of sytyarchives.com and I did that and it wouldn't start at all....

Anyone else? Since it starts and idles really rough where it's at, should I move them all one slot counterclockwise?

Re: Quick respond to firing order

Well it is actually 165432 1 being at TDC.

If you really question it, the firing order is cast into the lower intake, not that you can see it with upper installed.

Sounds to me like you need to verify where #1 is. If dist. has been out someone could have set it anywhere.

Re: Quick respond to firing order

I really do need to get the engine to top dead center and line it up with the right firing order, but I don't have the time/tools up here at college. I just need to figure out the right firing order as it is now and get it going. From the top of the distributor cap (between the 2 screws) i have the old distributor cap labeled as 1,2,3,4,5,6 going clockwise. The car will start and idle...barely...while shaking bad. What should I do?

Re: Quick respond to firing order

Can you remove the spark plug? Then manually turn the engine over by hand (not starter) with finger in #1 spark plug hole. Feel for air coming out. Just when air stops the timing mark should just about line up. That is TDC.

Now pull cap and rotor is pointing to YOUR #1. As I said it COULD be anywhere.

Then start locating wires, 165432 clockwise. 123456 if you got counterclockwise easy to remember that way.

1 is front left, 3 in middle, 5 in back of drivers side

2 pass side front, 4 in middle, 6 in back.

unless the distributor is installed 180 deg off then it should look like this:

Re: Quick respond to firing order

OMG!!! Sooooo frustrated with this. I set it at the same order as the old distributor ( #1 is by the firewall) and went clockwise from there, 1,2,3,4,5,6 and it will start but idle really bad. So I moved them all one position clockwise and tried it and nothing. So I repeated that whole process until I ended up where I was!!! I'm stumped!!!!! I can't manually turn the engine over or else I would put it on TDC and go from there.....I don't know what else to do

The flat spot on my distributor cap is facing the passenger side, not the drivers.....

Re: Quick respond to firing order

My distributor cap is off a couple of teeth I think because if you look at the flat side on the distributor cap, mine is facing toward the passenger side, not the drivers like in those last 2 diagrams. Thanks

whereever your #1 starts who knows until you can get some tools on it, but you need to go counterclockwise if using the 1-2-3-4-5-6, NOT clockwise. Once you get that straight you should be able to play with it until it runs right. just adjust it to where the idle should be, maybe keep it a little low to be safe. then get home and set it right asap.

Re: Quick respond to firing order

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the diagrams it shows 3 in that flat area by the firewall, then it goes around from there.......Well, #1 is in that area for me then it goes around COUNTERCLOCKWISE!!! lol At first it was smoking and smelled like a lot of fuel, but I'm sure that was from the multiple other times I was turning it over...lol...Another thing to do added to the list for this summer...reset distributor!

WOW!! Thank you guys for having that discussion. I'm the wife of Oklahoma Typhoon and I'm replacing the intake gaskets for the husband while he's at work. Thanks again for the info on this forum. I had forgotten to mark the cap before I removed it. Now, I can put it back together without calling him at work.
