My Ty doesnt need a key to start the engine

Hi guys...

This may sound odd but, I dont have to insert my key into the ignition to start the engine. You can just turn it without the key and (((bingo))) the engine starts. It really concerns me a lot because it is literally a piece of cake to steal it. Is this normal???

I think it's typical GM steering column/lock setup. That column came out in the early 80s, I believe. You should be able to find a rebuild kit or lock mech for it. I remember years ago, my stepdad had a Monte Carlo that would do the same thing.

dealership sells replacement switches for ~$30-40, complete with two new keys. The steering wheels gotta come out to change it, so a steering wheel puller is needed.

(Someone trying to steal it probably wont try to crank it without a key, just shove a screwdriver in and break it all to hell)

The dealer knows the OEM key code for your truck, assuming nothing has been changed over. They can order you a new tubmler assembly to fit the key you have. As mentioned above; you'll need to pull the wheel to do it, which isn't bad; steering wheel pullers are dirt cheap.

I almost found that out the hard way. Why it never crossed my mind before, I have no idea. I locked my only set of keys in my Blazer a couple of weeks ago. Pop-A-Lock wanted like $75 or $100. Then the dealer wouldn't do it because my name wasn't on the policy. I had to get the ins company to fax over some stuff that had me listed somewhere on the policy. All in all, it took about 7 minutes and $25 to get a key cut.
