depending onhow bad it really is, sometimes you can remedy a sticky coupler by replacing the fluid in the xfer case 2-3X with the Smart-Trac-2 fluid they sell at the stealership. You drain what is in your t-case, fill it with the ST-2 fluid, run the truck around for 15-20 minutes (getting the fluid warm), go back, drain it, re-fill it again, drive around for 15-20 minutes, flush it once more, and see if it helps. I have brought back 2 t-cases this way, and there is also a Tech Bulletin on it for the Bravadas.

Q

my Syclone acts like a 4wd, by this reply you wrote you mean that a broken VC acts like a 2wd, and a locked as a 4wd, so the chance that my VC is bad is verry little?
any more info on that st-2 fluid? like a name besides GM, so i can get it from a parts store?

Thanks

yeah, i'm curious about this myself now, since my truck will chirp the back tires w/ the new front driveshaft in.

I am not around the stuff right now....go to any GM dealership (it is specific stuff) and ask for it...it really works well...sells around here for $6/quart.....~2 needed for each fill.

The rear tires on my Sy and Ty both try to spin at the line...Theyve been doing it for years. :dunno:

I was driving it tonioght and when I cut the wheel all the way and start moving it doesnt jump around like its a 4wd, and like I said earlier it spins the fronts and then catches traction almost immediately so I hope its not the t-case and maybe the rear brakes are shot. (ive never even looked them since ive had the truck

If the vc is in question just pop the plug and smell the fluid, you will know it if its fried. These t-cases were probably the most simple units to work on.all you need is basic hand tools.

does a fried VC makes it 4wd or less awd?

:rotf: yeah im planning on upgrading the brakes eventually, but im like a lot of other people where I spend all my money on going fast first and dont worry about the braking till later

..hey guys...my T-case used to exhibit all the same symptoms....for the $30 you are going to spend on fluid changes, do that first....chances are it's not been done in quite awhile. The fluid shears way past its effeective range, and the VC doesn't act properly anymore.

Any idea what the GM stuff is? Reason I ask is the vc unit is sealed and doesnt receive any lube from the fluid thats actually in the xfer case so Im curious as to what the stuff is and how it works.

:popcorn2: I was thinking the same thing about sealed VC. I had a similair issue before I upgraded the rear wheel cylinders, but I also have a chirping tires when turning when my truck is cold.

And as I said earlier, go to GM stealership and ask to see the TSB on the NV4472 t-case out of a Bravada or Astro van...it will be there plain as day. Since I cannot find an exploded diagram of the TCase or VC, I cant explain any further....fluid does get in there (VC) and it does make a difference. This is first-hand experience speaking here - not BBS BS.

Re: Rear tires smoking at the line??

The manual says the VC is "nonserviceable" this may, repeat may, (I've never seen one) be interpreted as sealed. As in you can't take it apart. Manual also says that the VC is "filled with a high viscosity fluid." Hmmm, different than the fluid we fill with? Regardless I AM gonna try the "flush" trick already mentioned since mine spins a bit on launch as well.

Re: Rear tires smoking at the line??

Ive had the xfer case apart a couple dozen times and the vc is indeed welded shut. Im just curious how the stuff is able to affect the vc if it cant get in there

Re: Rear tires smoking at the line??

Well i am having the same problem on mine, if i remove the front prop shaft the truck wont hardly go anywhere and you can heat the front output of the t-case spinning like mad, but with the propshaft installed the truck drives like normal, but with the front wheels at full lock you have to really gas it to get it to move, and on wet ground it will skip along.

But at the track i try to roll around the water box, but thats not alwasy possible, so i will boost it up to a few pounds and it will spin the back tires alittle, just enough to dry them off while moving forward, althouht it has spun the back while sitting still, but i only did that for a sec or two then let off the brake.

My best 60' has been a 1.83, which i think is still alittle on the low side, and i didnt spin any tires on that launch, so im planning on getting a new t-case soon, and then im going to completley rebuild my stocker with a new everything.

Got Boost?
Re: Rear tires smoking at the line??

Had the same problem in my ty a while back. I adjusted the rear brakes and purchased new tires. Hasn't spun the rears since....
Not sure which one was the cure but if your tires are shot...that could be the issue too...
