Here's what I did with my 4th of July: Coilovers and Baers

While many of you were likely blowing shit up and gettin' wasted yesterday, my Dad and I spend the day working on this. Feels good to finally make some progress. The JSM coilover kit wasn't bad. Other than a few quality control issues (having to drill out holes a little more to install ball joints and having to cut a notch into the end of a tube to bit lower ball joints), it worked out pretty well. It would've been waaay nice to have been given a little variety of spacers for shimming the shock. It was kind of a pain fabricating our own. All in all, it looks pretty good. I'm really hoping I can't break it, cuz I planning on driving it pretty darn hard every now and again. Anyways, here are a couple pics I snapped this morning. Can't see much, I know. Just have to hook up the Baer brakes lines, bleed the brakes, and tighten everything down sometime today. Get an alignment tomorrow, and I'll be good to rail some corners hopefully.

Kind of bummed that the Baer Track calipers don't fully utilize the the big rotors. Can't imagine why they'd do that...
Also, anyone messed with the alignment specs or have any suggestions to do them any other way than suggested in the instructions for the coilover kit?

PS: I blew shit up on the 3rd instead.

Nice, cant wait till i have the coilover setup on my Ty.

I had those brakes on another car of mine and they provide lots of brake power, you should like them.

Thanks guys. Don't worry, not lookin' to chrome it out. I actually want to find some black ZR1's or get mine powder coated. I was gonna bug you yesterday Branden, but saw your post saying that you had a party with ladies. I know I wouldn't give that up for wrenchin' on a truck, so I figured you wouldn't either. Hope that all went well.

Haha, I think you liked that movie a little too much. The carrot in the eye pretty much did it for me though.

Re: Here's what I did with my 4th of July: Coilovers and Baers

pretty much with alignment specs don't run so much negative camber.

REAR - shouldn't even need to touch this, if you do the you have alignment problems with your flexaforms
FRONT - caster - keep stock - camber - .5 or close to stock should be ok, you can run a little more neg. due to your truck being lower, but not so much that the inside tread gets wasted. - toe - .10 out or positive toe.

Sorry, it was corn. Carrot in an eye wouldn't be funny, what was I thinking... I've read that it saves 120 lbs somewhere, I've also read 86 lbs. I didn't take the time to measure. All I know is it was enough to make me happy. The brakes are a bit heavier too, but I guess that's a good place to have it, in braking power. I saved a ton in the rear too. Those stock leafs are probably 50 or 60 lbs each. I replaced them with the fliberglass ones that are probably like 10 lbs each. I also got rid of my rear swaybar and went back to my stock one for the front, so I guess those are up for sale now. Also my front KYB Monomax shocks. I'd guess my truck is at least a good 200 lbs. lighter now, all in all.

Yup, I don't think I'll have any issues in the rear. We set the caster and camber this evening. Or actually, my Dad did. I just helped. I guess years of racing teaches you how to set that stuff up off the top of your head. We'll set the toe tomorrow morning, attach the brake lines, bleed them, and attach the sway bar ends to the control arms (which don't be seeming to line up). Then take it to get an alignment, take it back home, and give it a bath.

i would like to see some pics of you flexaforms. how did the ride height turnout? just curious as i might be going on my next to do list

Re: Here's what I did with my 4th of July: Coilovers and Baers

Ride height wasn't quite right. Here's how it goes. With no blocks and no wedge (because there aren't provisions to install it properly with these), the height was probably stock or close to stock. U-joint angle seemed ok without the wedge. I put a 1" block in there and it's a bit better. It should settle down a bit more I'm thinkin' and I'll be able to carry people without the thing bottoming out. 2" blocks might put me on the bump stops sometimes. The problem is, if they were made to put the truck lower, the springs may be hitting the exhaust, which I guess could be fixed by a longer rear shackle. I haven't driven it much since the install, but what I did drive felt reeeeaaal nice. I'm happy with the performance, not the way the installation went or the way I got the springs. There's a bit of fabrication to be done to make the springs work (at least in my situation). I ordered them with a 2" drop and a 300# rate instead of the normal 240#, so maybe that's what's causing the ride height issue. My truck was lower with 2" blocks, at least for the time being. I'll get some pics of the truck when it's back on the ground.
