Re: typhoon tire pressure??

The max psi on tires means that its the MAX psi that the tire will see when its FULLY HOT , Highway/race driving.
If you inflate your tires to the max on the tires when they are cold/not driven for several hours, they can BLOW...

Huh? So if I air it up to 30 psi and the tire says max psi 44, it will gain 14 psi just from getting hot. That don't make a whole lotta sense.

Max psi it the maximum psi that the tire should be aired up to when hot. In school, I was taught that you air it up ~4-5 psi less than the specified pressure if cold. So if you want 35 psi, air them up to ~30 psi cold.

No they wont gain that much. I think tires tend to change about +/- 2-3 psi depending on weather change and temps. For example if you set cold tire pressure at 30 and drive on a nice warm day and check them, they may read 32 or 33. Once they cool down they may read 30 again. You should never set a tire pressure to what the tire says on the sidewall. That's MAX pressure under MAX load.

Re: typhoon tire pressure??

You can safely inflate your tires to the max pressure listed on the sidewall when they are cold. The mfg knows that people will do this and they have a safely factor built into the max pressure rating. Do you really think that the general public is intelligent enough to be able to factor in their own safety window and inflate 2 or 3 lbs less than max. Do you think they would be able to factor in weather conditions and their anticipated diving habits until they decide to check or change the air pressure. This country is so law suit happy, the tire mfg's have to have a safety factor built in or they all would be in court on a daily basis. The general public is so stupid, that today I learned that a woman purchased a chocolate (yes-real edible chocolate) didlo and used it on herself, got an infection, sued the mfg and won in court. How about all the warning labels on stuff like don't use your hair dryer while in the bath tub, don't eat those little moisture absorbing silicone packets or you will get sick, your toaster is not intended to be used to dry clothes ect..................................................... heck, why do you think there are tire air pressure sensors in the newer cars. It is because the general public is too lazy and stupid to check their own air pressure and low air pressure causes poor gas mileage (among other things) Rant off. Inflate away.

WOW!

:woot:

I deal with the general public and tires on a daily basis. I just love the way you said it all.. I feel the same way and I couldnt have said it bester myself...

Thank You.

Re: typhoon tire pressure??

Once again Dave steps up and teaches me something (and I will assume others as well). Thanks Dave.

For sure the sun has an effect on tire pressure. We have tire covers for the rear slicks when we go drag racing specifically to keep the sun off the tire and changing the pressure. Look at the Pro catagories (others as well) on television (NHRA on ESPN) and you will see the covers sometimes. We will always check pressure just before the water box.

Temp change has an effect as well. Isn't there a theory that for every drop in temp (heading to winter time) of 10 degrees, you will see a 1 lb drop in pressure. I know when late fall and winter comes, I am adding air.

Your final tire pressure can vary due to many factors. Load, ride quality desired, tire wear (as the miles pile on) among others. Use the info sticker as a guide and you'll be in the ball park and adjust accordingly from there.
