Re: Blew my Engine

I owned that truck for 13 years, and put 30,000 miles on that engine in less than 18 months. Only took him 17 days to blow it up. And it DOES have a boost gauge. That was a genuine SyTy standard-bore block, in a very nice Typhoon.

What a waste.

Wow thats too bad, very nice truck. Get it rebuilt right and get that thing back on the road for another 100k:tup:

Didn't realize this was your old truck Dave. Wow.

Hopefully this can be a lesson in the future to new owners who have a heavy foot, a need for speed and a lack of research and understanding.

Re: Blew my Engine

Well I have'nt even had my truck a month yet and already blew the engine.

What looks like happened is that the boost line came off, causing an over boost.

I was changing the idler arm and trying to reach the bolts and must have broke the elbow on the solenoid.

Stupid me for not watching the boost gage, but either way my fault and will need to rebuild/replace.

My question is for those that have been down this road, is it worth it to try and repair ( looks like it went throught the oil pan) or get another shortblock, buy a rebuilt etc.......

Thanx:)

Pull it apart and inspect the damage. Then, decide whether it needs a new block or if the old one can be reused.

Re: Blew my Engine

This sounds all too familiar to me! I had my truck for about a year before I threw a rod out the oil pan... When I was pulling the motor out I noticed the rubber elbow on the wastegate solenoid was broken off! Same senario, a part that cost pennies could have saved my motor. I was new and dumb, I didn't have a boost gauge in the truck and I didn't have DataMaster. I thought I could drive by feel and sound... Expensive lesson learned!!

When I blew mine up I kept it quiet because I didn't want get sh*t from the peanut gallery of "know it alls" on here. Unfortunately or fortunately, however you want to look at they are right. I wish I had listened more and paid attention before I bought my truck. I just got it and started beating the piss out of it, cost me a motor and a bunch of headaches! Don't take it personal, there's a wealth of knowledge on here and if you had known it could have prevented these things. I too learned the hard way, don't sweat it! You'll be back in business and a smarter man after all this.

welcome to the forums mate :)

There's no harm intended - the people on here that help out see this happen a lot.

Guarantee you'll get some good advice for putting her back together from Jeff (TwinTurboV8Ty) and the others.

It's a love hate thing

Re: Blew my Engine

speaking of knock retard.

if one had that amount of knock to kill the motor. you really should have heard the pinging/rattling sound that kinda sound like to hammer heads banging together.

I can hear knock really well but it has come at a price( headgaskets on the GN)

does the syty guy use the Casper's knock gauge?

I think you could, if you wanted - you'd have to get a knock module from a N/A 4.3 instead of the Buick module. You'd also need a separate sensor, as the stock sensor and the regular 4.3 one will likely have different impedance values.

It wouldn't track exactly with what the ECM is reading with knock, but it would be better than nothing.

You can also build the little circuit that hangs off of the chip carrier in the ECM. Just gives you an LED, but it's lots cheaper.

Re: Blew my Engine

MSD makes a knock alert that uses a standard GM knock sensor. It works well. Have had it on various cars. Was going to put it on the Syclone but found a brand new J&S knock control. Its all hooked up. I leave the sensitivity in the middle. Although its running on 100 octane all the time. Has a nice red LED line. At night it lights up the cab enough you can see it out of the corner of your eye.
Best part about it is the box is pulling timing and saving the motor!!!!

The same thing happened to me, well sort of, so don't take it personally, just fix it and enjoy it again. This reminds me of my favourite quote, "Experience is something you get right after you need it"
