MN/ND/WI Nats caravan?

Re: MN/ND/WI Nats caravan?

Who's still in for the Caravan-

Apparent schedule- (I'm padding this a bit as I have a 5 yr old)

I'll leave here Wed AM, will make it through the Cities around noon. Won't be towing anything, so I can make decent time. Suspect we'll be eating there. Current carload is Me + 3.

From there, plan will be to go East on 94. Puts us around Rockford area at around supper time, good to probably break there to avoid traffic. Not going through Chicago.

From there, Bloomington , IL. is another 2.5 or so. I figure we'll sack out there for the night.
Hit the road around 9:00 the next day. About 7 hrs to BG from here.

Food again around Indy or Louisville?

This would get us into BG at 4-5 PM.

This, of course, assumes no downtimes, major weather, or boogered-up traffic. Obviously, nobody is limited in how fast you wanna travel or if you want to stop for the night. It's generally good to stay with the pack in case you have issues.

My goal isn't gonna be to see how fast I can get there... my travel crew is going to make that tough.
I like to see the countryside some too.

Re: MN/ND/WI Nats caravan?

So the Digmobile isn't going to make it to Nats this year?

It's not ready. Linda's dad hasn't been doing well, so I really haven't gotten a whole lot of chances to mess with it, due to lack of free time.

I'd really rather not risk messing something up really bad because I threw it together in a hurry. And, there's no point in trailering it a couple thousand miles if it's just gonna sit there. Especially in light of the fact that we plan on going other places after Nats.

With all the stuff going on at Nats this year, I don't know how much time I would have had to tweak it anyway, even if it were in a raceable condition.

Yeah, that makes sense...

Re: MN/ND/WI Nats caravan?

I am planning on leaving St Paul Thursday early morning, due to the GF working Wednesday.
Probably leave early and make it a long day, 4am or so, we are tentatively thinking of going down 35 and cutting over to cedar rapids and down Mo/ Ill border on the MO side due to cheaper gas prices and no toll Roads. the cutting across north of St Louis. map quest shows about 13.5 hours.

We are trailering a typhoon, not sure which one yet...... and driving a crew cab chevy 1500 HD

You must be psychic... I was just gonna bring up the IA route.

There's all of about 30 mins difference between the 2, now that the Av. of the Sts. is operational and 4-lane the whole way. Might even be quicker, since there's likely to be less traffic.

St. Louis traffic would be the only concern, but you can kind of go around it.

Things to note (for those who haven't gone this way):

There's some odd/tricky routing in Cedar Falls to stay on IA 27 (Av of Sts). Once you get past that, you're good.

Seems like the highway that angles towards bowling green from owensboro was toll? Been a while since I've been through there.

Makes no diff to me which angle we go.

Appears there's some construction on 218/27 south of Charles City... but no biggie. 2 lane operation for a while. MO looks pretty clear. KY doesn't display any construction on that route either.

I like it.

Ok, new plan.

Cities on noon Wed.

Iowa City by Supper time, or Mt. Pleasant. There's a Super 8 in Mt. Pleasant, another one in Keokuk, although that's a bit out of the road.

You'll probably catch up with us, Justin, somewhere along the line.

Re: MN/ND/WI Nats caravan?

yeah that might work out, otherwise we could cut across down through pieoria, but i like the idea of MO since I have never been that way before...

it would be a long day for me but we have drivers to swap so it shouldnt be much of a issue.

I've done the 17 hour drive thing before- it's no fun, but doable. You don't have quite that far to go. :)

I'll ping you with contact #s before we leave.

Later,

Re: MN/ND/WI Nats caravan?

Heads up to those going down I-94 through Racine and Kenosha: I-94 is being rebuilt from S. Milwaukee all the way to the state line, so that could case some major delays. Also, the typical s&*t going through the Dells and Madison.

Re: MN/ND/WI Nats caravan?

alright. I think adam was planning a long day with me leaving MN on thursday AM. ( last we talked).

If we leave the cities by 4am we should be able to meet up in iowa city or Mt pleasant by 9-10am or so. From there its about a 9 hour drive or so. When are you planning on heading out from IA on thursday? ealier than that?
Im sure either way we will catch up between breaks and gas stops.

Re: MN/ND/WI Nats caravan?

Talked to Jim the other night, didn't sound like he was gonna know his plans until next week.

Screw it, I threw some t-bar mounts in rusty and just need to check it over. Maybe hook up the egr again or tune it out or something. If DaveP's truck can make it, rusty can too.

Anyway I will probably leave here and meet up with Justin, thursday (am) and head out from there. Or maybe just leave with dig and take it easy on the old girl.:rotf:

That's cool with us. You can lead, I'll ride the draft and dodge any body parts that fall off. I can probably get 650 miles out of a tank with Rusty punching a hole in the air.

Justin, we'll likely leave Mt. Pleasant around 9:00.. I'll send you some contact #s so if you're in the area around that time, give us a buzz. You'll likely overtake us anyway.

FYI, I-380 south of Waterloo is kinda cop-heavy. Gets better south of Cedar Rapids. Seems like the eastbound stretch of IA-27 just out of Mason City had some activity as well.
