4l80e output shafts

Ok, I need one of these soon and to my knowledge nobody makes one right now. So i have been talking to some people that are willing to make some. The question is how much will it cost, time frame, and material used.

RPM said they were going to use 80e shafts and machine them down to fit with the correct spline.

The machine shop said it might be better if we start with 4340 blanks and make brand new pieces.

I am looking into both alternatives.

The problem with the first option is the metal is hardened, it would need to be annealed, machined, and then re-hardened. But may be a little cheaper. That depends on how many people want shafts.

The second option is stronger, possibly a faster turnaround time, and fewer things to go wrong. Bad thing is they would cost around $550.00 a piece to make.

These would probably be 27 spline. I am open to any ideas and can pm my number to anyone who wants to get in depth. Please leave comments, good or bad, plus any ideas concerning this whole thing.

i just saw rpm has a shaft for the t-case so you can leave the 80e as is . while i dont want to have to rebuild the t-case after building my other 80e , it does look like an easy option with a better end result . He doesnt list a price on that item though ...call for pricing .

i should have marty call for me , he always gets better deals than i do .

I talked to mike this morning. He is not making them right now. he is going to buy some from me. He is really too busy to deal with such a small order

other than a necked down shaft is a little weaker

If you need output shaft I have some you could barrow 4l80e and 4l60e

Any shop that thinks you need to anneal the shaft to machine doesn't know how to machine. I have done it 20-30 times, never annealed a single shaft.

Post heat treat wouldn't be bad idea, but you really need to do in induction harden and quench, you don't want the shaft hard all the way through just the spline area.

I think I posted drawings on here also.

4140 or similar would be cool, but you have to start with a billet almost 5" in diameter. $300 just for the chunk of steel before any machining gets started or heat treated. This is the reason GB went to the input shaft on trans as it is only 2" or so in diameter so the billet is a lot cheaper.

I have the material specs at work somewhere if you want them. I may have even posted those. We did a spectrograph at work on a shaft.

Re: 4l80e output shafts

wow, good info.i never knew one started to twist. Well, i would rather error on the safe side. the machinist said he could do between 5 and 10 made of 4340(then heat treated) at 550. Not a steep price but i was hoping to make it more affordable. thanks again guys.
