Car wash = Wet carpet

I washed the Ty today and when I went to vacuum the interior the drivers side floor was soaking wet?? Pull the carpet up and it looks like this has been happening for a while now.

Anyone have this problem? know how to solve it?

Thanks

Eric

Check for any open holes in your firewall and make sure your door seals are not torn or rotted.

To see if you can find where it's coming from, sit in the drivers seat and have someone hit your truck with the hose. (water from the hose, not the hose itself...)

check and see if the factory sealant on the floor plug has dried out and come loose,it's that or it's got some rust pin holes in it.Or is it anti freeze?

It's not antifreeze, it was soapy water. The rubber around the door seems fine, it's got to be coming from the firewall/cowl. I took the kick panel off and the insulation behind that was wet as well.

Hood hinge maybe is the source? the foam rubber seal around the hole is pretty much gone???

Windshield leak? Water always ends up on the floor (it never travels "up"). Exactly how much of the carpet is wet and exactly where? By the firewall? By the door? Get under the dash with a flash light or shop light. You can also start the vehicle, close all windows, turn on the heat or a/c full blast, close all the doors and spray soapy water around the windshield and or other suspected areas and look for bubbles or take a blow gun connected to a compressor and blow air backwards from the interior and look for the bubbles on the outside.

The truck was parked on slight upward angle in the driveway so all the water pooled in the back of the drivers side foot well and forward to about the rubber pad in the carpet. It was also wet a long the door sill. The kick panel insulation was wet to about half way up. I didn't notice any water from under the dash(not to say it didnt come from there)

Will try the bubbles tomorrow.

The drain at the bottom of the cowl is plugged with debris. The water fills up and comes in around the cover behind the kick panel. I just went out and looked. You can't see the drain with the bottom of the front fender installed. It's about 1/4" X 1". Might be able to probe it with a piece of welding rod, or something, down through the hood hinge hole.

Those hood hinge seals are to keep under-hood hot air and fumes out of the fresh air plenum which provides fresh air to the interior. Water wouldn't matter. Lots of water goes in the cowl vent itself. Water by the hood hinges ends up in the same place.

X2 Beat me to it, dang. :rotf: Good call, seems nobody thinks of this one...

DaveP, You rock..

Can you see the hole from under the truck? I have no cladding on the truck.

Bottom of the front fender?

Re: Car wash = Wet carpet

With no cladding, it should be pretty easy, provided the bolts aren't too rusted in. PB blaster might be needed. Remove the bottom bolt on the inside of the fender. (crawl under and look up and out to see this one.) Remove the first three or four inner wheelhouse to fender bolts.
Open the door, and remove the two bolts that go through the hinge bracket to hold the fender. Pull the bottom of the fender out gently, and you should be able to see the hole. It's formed by the various pieces of metal.

Before you do all this, try pouring a bucket full of water in the cowl. It should rush right out at the door/fender joint, under the truck. Compare the two sides of the truck to get an idea of if it's really this drain being plugged or not. My thinking behind suggesting a test, is I like the hypothesis regarding a windshield leak suggested above. If that plastic screen under the panel that the wiper shafts go through is still there, it's pretty hard for leaves and stuff to get in the cowl in the first place.

Let us know what you find.

I will definitely jump on this tomorrow and let you guys know what the problem was.

I do park under a F**ing Maple tree, I bet there are a ton of those helicopter things in there!!

Re: Car wash = Wet carpet

have this same problem with my s10 and the company s10, haven't had the chance to look into it yet, but all the s10's i've ever owner the hood hinges foam was always mostly torn off or gone, and none have ever leaked besides these 2, so i'm gonna go out on a limb and say thats not the problem.

i do know that when putting my s10 together it had tons of junk is the cowl drainage areas and i blew it all out, so i can't imagine that thats what my problem is but it still leaks. could very well be the windshield to.

i had a car that the windshield glue had a chemical reaction with the windshield and it started to lift away, i could literally push the window out, and the guy who came to install the new one had said that if i let it go any longer and happened to have a loud subwoofer or hit something in the front of the car that the windshield woulda popped outta the car.

behind the drivers side kick panel there is supposed to be a plastic cover with a rubber seal around it, and i've seen people take them out before to run stereo wiring and the blamo, leaky insides. something to check at least

Re: Car wash = Wet carpet

The seal between the kick panel and cowl is dried out. Pull the kick panel and replace the dumb dumb tape. That's the sticky mess on the backside of the kick panel. Clear the drain while you're in there.

Re: Car wash = Wet carpet

Ok guys it is coming from the kick panel, I poked all the maple helicopters out of the drain. so its flowing free. It wasn't really that plugged up, I think it was just a leaking from that huge hole in the kick panel with the bad seal.

Thanks again everyone SyTy.net rocks.

Heading to the GM parts dealer to get a replacement

Parts dept. closed for the day... Anywhere else I get a replacement. Want to take care of this tonight=]

the kick panel is the plastic cover that screws inside to the side of the cab by your feet and is right next to the paring brake lever

If you sit in the drivers seat, the kick panel is below the dash at your feet, all the way to your left, just in front of the door. The plastic panel or "kick panel" is held in by 4 screws give or take and behind that is where I was told to look for the leak, and that is where I found it. It's what appears to be a large rubber inner tube patch with gooey s**t all around the edges that is where the leak was comign in, the gooey stuff was no longer holding the rubber over the hole, hence the leak. I have yet to "repair" it, just got some silicone on it at the moment. Going to replace the carpet and take care of the rust bubles, hopefully in the next few weeks and then see how the silicone is holding up and go from there.

Good Luck to you

Eric
