Today's reality check

Now I know I am starting to get old......

1. So I finally got the Typhoon I wanted to buy new when I was 16. Now parts are becoming obsolete for it already. I am having a helluva time just finding a friggin fluid recovery reservoir for it! Has it really been that long already???

2. Jiffy Lubes are known for its employees being "kids" that LOVE cars. I went there yesterday to drop off a bunch of used oil I had around the garage. THE MANAGER OF ALL PEOPLE, looks at my Typhoon and says "Nice Blazer"! As much as I should have appreciated the compliment, I looked at him and said "Thanks! I lowered it and put some ground effects on it"

He had no idea......

3. Not 10 mins later, I stopped in Autozone to get a new fuel filter. I told the guy behind the counter that I needed one for a 93 GMC Typhoon. He just stared at me with that "dog into record player" look. I then said "Just get me one for a 93 Blazer or Jimmy". While in the computer he says "Oh look- it says Typhoon also" proceeded by "WOW its got a turbo on it? A Jimmy with a turbo huh? It must be fast. I have never even heard of them."

He had no idea.....

I guess this generation of gearheads isn't as smart as we were. Although driving this truck makes me feel 18 again:tup:

Re: Today's reality check

You will get used to part guys. With a Syclone, I have to tell them its a 91 GMC Syclone with a 'S" They guy usually starts in and say he need to know the body type. I tell him its a S15 Sonoma, but they usually have Syclone ing list and then he usually say 'oh they actually do have a Syclone in here, I have never heard of one of those beore'

Are you looking for an coolant over flow bottle? I bought on from GM earlier this year. They will just send you a regular S10/S15 bottle which doesn't have the 2nd nipple for the upper IC over flow (I usualy just block that off anyways)

Re: Today's reality check

Your not getting old.

The fact is, the SyTy isnt a well known vehicle due to poor marketing, poor sales, and for the most part was done as a promotional gimmick and game to see if they could really do it.

It wasnt the iconic vehicle like the GN, camaro, corvette is/was. It was a bastard stepchild and side project that caugtht the attention of some and faded out quickly. Those who do them know usually have the response of "oh wow, i remember those..." Its just not a memorable vehicle for the majority. People dont really associate speed with trucks, even today. We are a cult and enthusiast group. We support ourselves. This is why you see the closer friendship atmosphere around here than other forums. A large majority of people on here know each other personally and have meet more than once...not just behind a keyboard.

You think you don't get recognized in a Sy/Ty, like nobody knows what it is, try driving a Shelby/Dodge car....

Re: Today's reality check

....it will ONLY get worse when the "CASH for CLUNKERS" bill is passed.
(that is parts gettling harder to find, vehicles getting crushed, insurance payouts for bumps-bruises, etc).
You`ll be lucky to show someone a PICTURE of a SYCLONE or TYPHOON (like a Model T).

Re: Today's reality check

Well, I feel a little better now. I actually just came back from Greenway GMC in Morris IL with the part for $22. They had to get it from a dealership a few hundred miles away, but they got it:tup:

There was some confusion with the part # etc. The actual part number on the tank is obsolete- so they had to cross ref. it with the new one. This is the only one they could get and I have to modify it by drilling a hole with a fitting for the IC hose. No big deal. Just would have been nice to plop it right in, but at least this one doesn't leak!

An old timer salesman came up to me as we were taking off the old part for the number and asked "Is that the real deal Typhoon?" Before I could answer, he saw the Syclone intake, smiled and started to compliment and ask me about it. He hadn't seen one in close to 10 years! He said he was glad that "there are still one on the road"!

Re: Today's reality check

the numbers on the tank are casting or engineering numbers, the tank is correct with no hole as PAS added the hole

Awesome post, I get it all the time with the Syclone...somehow though next time it comes out of the garage I have a feeling people will understand what the name behind the Syclone stands for...

Ya, it's got a Turbo
Re: Today's reality check

You think they're rare down there? You should try driving one up here! Only the real sport truck enthusiasts know what they are/were. No one ever tries to race me, or even takes a second look, except to ask; "What skirt kit is that?". To which I usually reply; "Dunno, came with the truck". :)

Re: Today's reality check

The better half and I were test-driving some cars at a GM dealer a few weeks ago and the salesman asked what we were driving now - I told him that I had a sonoma with a S/C'd 4.3.
He immediately got excited and started babbling on about how rare the truck was. I corrected him, but I was really impressed that he'd even heard of a syclone (even if he didn't quite know what one was)!

They're not quite so rare here in Edmonton though!

Re: Today's reality check

I keep looking at buying a new dailly driver... and as a joke for each dear ship I hit up I ask them what they will give me for my 92 Typhoon and hand them the VIN + the millage...

Some of them just laugh at me... then get this look of shock when they get the blue book back XD

Then the questions rain down on me about what a Typhoon really is...

Re: Today's reality check

funniest comment, one night I was board looking for a race and I found a mostly stock newer s-10 with the 4.3, he sees my truck and is like wow dude, it that like a first gen extreame or something bro, I responded why yes it is, wanna race, you know the rest.
afterwards we sat and talked for a couple hours and I educated him on the syty's cool kid.
his truck done the one wheel peel for ever, I actually launched and then got out of it because I thought he didnt go for some reason then after a closer look in the mirror realized he was coming. swear to god,

Re: Today's reality check

every once in a while you get that random person who knows... When i started my most recent job (walmart... mainly for medical benefits) one of my female co-workers walks in and hurrys straight over to me. Now since this was one of my first days I was thinking oh crap am I already in trouble? she immediately says "where the hell did you get that Typhoon? there were only about 2,000 made each year and they run the quarter in 13 and 1/2... I can't believe I finally saw one, that think is sexy" Of course i responded with, how the hell do you know what that is? I think I got just as surprised that someone knows what the truck is...It catches me off guard every time... granted it only happened twice. Everyone else just tells me that they like my blazer and ask me where I bought the body kit... or the "if so much stuff broke on it, why dont you just junk it and get an extreme?" :squint:

<stepping off my soapbox now>

Believe me... I'm 18 and own a 93 ty. I worked at Schucks and those people are dumba$$es. Nobody there knew what a Typhoon was until I drove it to work and explained it to them. Ur right... your generation does know a lot more about cars than my generation, cuz now it's just all new mercedes that you can't work on anyway. But hey... there are some of us out there still tryin to keep up with the old farts.
