Want OBDII!!

Re: Want OBDII!!

Drivers are not "reprogrammed" when you go to 75# and larger injectors there are physical electronic components inside the ECM that must be changed out. Solder is involed not a laptop.

If you go to 60/65's that issue is avoided.

You will need a custom tune for things to be RIGHT. That will involve someone (yourself or a hired tuner) to actually look at the logs from your truck and make corrections. These will probably involve I would guess 20 or more trying of different chips in order to get you close. Basically it will take some time.

I could send you some 75# programs, you can login to code59 and download them for free. They would be a "start" but if the truck were mine I would spend 20 minutes on idle before I even left the driveway and probably made 100 changes before leaving the driveway.

If what you are speaking of is the ecm mod required for high imp. injectors I know about that and that kind of thing is easy to me. I know a lot about cars just don't know jacks#!t about tuning. I mean I don't understand the first thing, just really need a 2 hr crash course/breakdown. If someone wants to teach me I will pay, and offer up a nice vacation spot.

Thanks nick

Re: Want OBDII!!

Tuning was rough for me. I am like you and learn by watching. Problem for me was that no one lived near me that was a tuner. I had to learn everything myself. CODE59 was about to be released when I started tuning myself. Every time I had a question, I would have to post about it or PM someone walking me through it. It was a PITA, though I was very grateful to have help at all, waiting for replies and PM's would make things take forever. Once I started to get the feel of it all, it became easier and easier. What I also did, and would recommend to any new tuner, is to print out Jeff's write up and take it with you. Practicing idle tuning will really get you in the "feel" of how tuning works. Once you grasp what it is you are trying to do, things just start falling in to place. I would also recommend you get a procedure down before start. Listen to guys like Dig and Jeff, you can fool yourself all day that you don't need to take xxx step first but I am here to tell you, you do. I am always willing to try and help news guys tuning as best I can. Though I am not a pro I definitely know the basics and still think like a "new guy" and can relate. Good luck.

I think you guys are talking about two different style injectors. You mentioned you were going to run 75lb'rs and TwinTurboV8Ty assumed you were refering to low imp. injectors since most injectors that size are low imp. You must have a set of high imp. 75lb'rs. They do exist although they're not that common. Nothing has to be done to the ECM to run those, but I will tell you that running high imp. injectors that big will make idle tuning more difficult. I would opt for the low impeadance version.

I meant low imp. I am sorry about that I always mix those two up inadvertently. The 75#'s are low imp. and I plan on doing the mod prior.

My little brother that is an electrical engineer is the one who mentioned to do the obdII setup since he is very familar with that tuning aspect. He drives a 99 ls1 that does 7.40's (1/8th) with only heads cam and slicks, he does all his own tuning and is really good at it. I love my little brother but sometimes he just doesn't have the time to help me or teach me things about tuning. Anyway he has been following this post and just signed up with code59, he found a tune by Mike Hood that is almost exactly my build and says he can handle it from there, he thinks. I do need about $600 worth of tuning equipment so if anyone has any extra used tuning stuff I do have an ultimate chip that i guess I wont be using that I could trade or many other SyTy parts. Also if anyone wants to volunteer a phone # and some tuning advice in case my little brother runs into any problems that would help.

I am just waiting on my 4 bolt main block to come back from the machine shop and we will hopefully have the motor in by next weekend.

Thanks for all the help guys I really do appreciate it.

Re: Want OBDII!!

Once you learn to tune, all the other systems become that much easier to learn. The same principles apply OBD1 OBD2, bigstuff, fast, etc. They all work about the same.
