I've been watching this forum for a few months and located a low mileage ty with some mods that is local. The problem I've run into is the ower has owned it for a year but doesn't know much about it.So if I can get my pictures to load any info you can give me from the pics would be helpful. Owner wants $12,500 obo. with 37,800 miles. Truck has been painted comes with stock and aftermarket wheels. Truck runs strong no leaks, no rust, a/c and heater work. Bads rear tailgate doesn't open and the rear Dr. side cladding has a crack in it where someone hit it. What price would you pay for it?
Thank you in advance. Hopfully I can own one so I can post here more.

Re: Newby! Help with Ty purchase

I wouldn't pay his asking price. I would offer $8750.00 and see what happends. I know that's alot lower than what hes asking, but the market right now is totally crap. He will be keeping it for awhile at his price.I would think it's worth 10k,but watch other posts will say different.

Isnt that tyson's ty?

No, that truck has been for sale now for a bit in the Sarasota area. That truck looks like a low mile hack job to me and no where worth the asking price if you ask me.

Im about 3 hours away....if theres anything I can possibly do to help, let me know.

Re: Newby! Help with Ty purchase

This Ty has been for sale probably 6 times in the last 2.5 years. I first saw this car on Autotrader in November 2006 (I even still have the Autotrader printout) The reason the Autocheck on this Ty only goes back to 2006 is because it was owned by a U.S. serviceman in Japan until 2006 when it was traded into a Ford dealer in Des Moines, IA. I called this dealer when it showed up for sale. They claimed it had no rust and it still had Japanese license plates when they acquired it. Oddly enough their asking price was only $10,993 and that was with 36,251 miles and in a better economy. Seems like this is another one of those Tys that just gets passed around by those trying to make a quick buck.

Re: Newby! Help with Ty purchase

It looks like a nice ride but something about it just doesnt seem right. I just get a funny vide from those pics and it being passed around.

Is that a hole in the front bumper? And whats up with those reflectors on the front fenders, do they blink too?

Those were added because the truck was licensed in Japan; I believe they also serve as blinkers.

Re: Newby! Help with Ty purchase

looks like it has an electric fan as well... Is that front mount ic's core really that small?

The bang underneath the floor board could be the exhaust but most likely a torsion bar mount going bad which is pretty common on these trucks due to there age. It's like a $39 part and not a hard job but i'd look to get a seasoned syty owner to go with you to check the truck out again... in the day light and take your time. Let the truck idle for a little while until it's good and warm, pull the oil filler cap and see if you see any blue or white smoke or put your hand over it and see if you feel allot of pressure pushing out on you if you do then you have some blow by.

Take the truck for a spin, make sure you can get full boost in it and make sure the 1-2 shift is very firm.

Check the body over for any rust along the bottom of the doors and on the back tail gate. Also check where the body mounts to the frame.

Get the numbers off the housing of the turbo, you can search them out later on the net to see what kind of turbo it is but it can't be too radical I think I see orange injectors which are stockers.

Also since the egr is removed and blocked off, has this been disabled with in the chip? if so what chip does it have in it? was it tuned for that turbo?

Some of those questions that are unknown may or should help lower that price because you could be getting yourself into a real head ache.

Re: Newby! Help with Ty purchase

Just with the truck being passed around and Adam calling it a hack job would be enough to defer me from from even looking at it. (unless it was like 5k)

Ive never personally seen the the truck. In fact, I didnt know it was roaming here in FL until just recently. My assumption is just based on the pics...it looks cheaply modified and stuff was just tossed at it. Cut up bumper and support...whacky intake tube (if thats what it is), messy wiring, and im sure other quarky stuff done that isnt visible.....mix that in with owners who dont know anything and beat on the truck and you got yourself a potential timebomb.

Interior looks clean though and as it should with 30k. To me, its a solid 9-10k max truck at its best....low miles doesnt mean anything if the motor is hurt (not saying it is, btw). Replacing the bumper/support is going to be around 800-1000k with paint match, so Id knock that right off the price. I think the current 8,400 bid would be a perfect buy. :2cents:

Re: Newby! Help with Ty purchase

Thanks guys for the insight on the truck I don't know the ends and outs of these trucks so the input you give is taken to heart. A good friend and I went over the truck but I was not able to identify the injectors by eye and the turbo had no id plate on it . We also noticed the fire wall was black we were not sure if the truck was originally white. I rode with the owner the truck made about 10-11 pounds of boost pretty fast motor seemed never to miss a beat or knock. I was concerned about the Intercooler piping and size of the core seems small. I have the means and ability to fix the problems that I saw But i didn't want to dump a bunch of money into something thats pointless to fix. I haven't seen many Ty available around me and I was getting anxious to buy one, but maybe I need to slow down. If anyone knows of a Ty being put up for sale let me know Im looking .This site has been very helpful.
Thank you again

10-11psi and missing....yeah, read my post above, i called that one easily and I didnt have to see the truck in person to know. that truck is hurt...could be minor stupid stuff, or could be major. wont know until you buy it , hehe.

theres a super nice green/gry for sale over in the same area. that truck is worth the money being asked for it...maybe able to talk down 1-2k less. wish I had that amount of funds...im looking for another Ty myself, but in the cheaper range.

whoops...reading owns me. my bad.

still raises the question of why only 10-11psi and also riding by the seat of your pants thinking the truck is running well is not a good diagnosis. Hook that thing up to diacom/datamaster and get a real readout.

Agreed, it alos raises the question why didn't Cliff get to test drive the Ty? Of course maybe that was 10-11 lbs on the stock gauge.

Re: Newby! Help with Ty purchase

The truck didn't have a tag on it and was in a hi cop traffic area I fiqured if he wants to drive it and get the ticket fine by me. I rather pay attention to how it sounds clicks bangs and not distracted by getting pulled over and risking my job. Im still not completely turned off by it. Also It was 11 pounds on the piller guage. The greem/gray ty down south seems priced a little high to me that looks like a $10-11 not a 14-15 thousand dollar truck in this market I thought I read where a ty with 5000 miles sold for 16 a few months back but I'm probably wrong. I will put a call in to go see it you never know what will happen. Maybe I should invest in diacom/datamaster before I buy
Thanks for the quick responses

You are correct, a ~4500 mile '92 teal Ty sold at Barrett Jackson in 2008 for $16,000.
