help me decide on a TY

Newbie questions, and looking for advise...
I am pretty stuck on getting a Typhoon, and I have been diving into research for a while now. I happened across one today, and it is very possible that I may grab it.

I need some help and advise--I have a few pictures below, and here is the quick summary of everything I could find wrong with it...keep in mind I'm only showing you the bad...The good is at the end! So, the question is, "is it worth it, would you get it?"

Stock radio head unit is MIA
Window motors might need to be replaced--they sound tired.
Exhaust smokes a little, so the valve guides might be going
Driver's seat has a few flaws
Small spot of rust on the rear passenger window (is this a common rust spot?)
Pics:

Rear passenger tire has a dent:

Passenger door has a scratch

Passenger door cladding is rubbing:
100_0497.jpg

Driver's side door rust:

Passenger door rust (I tried to do a panoramic pic, but it didn't stitch correctly:
100_0500.jpg

driver's seat damage:
100_0503.jpg

Passenger seat belt cover is cracked:
100_0502.jpg

So now the good:
What I have listed above is all the bad...everything else is good.
All hoses, belts are solid
NO LEAKS found anywhere.
Everything works well
52K original miles
Matching #'s
Has all original documentation
Drives well, brakes well.
Boots have no cracks
Driveshafts are SOLID with no play (from what I have read, this means it wasn't launched hard too much...right?)
Other than the paint blemishes listed/shown above, the paint is PERFECT

They are asking $13,995.00, but I'm sure I can negotiate that down...what do you think is a good price?

The plan has always been to invest in a blueprint / rebuild of the motor and trans (just because)..perhaps a new(slightly bigger) turbo.

Anything that I change from stock, will be kept safely for any "return to stock" ideas in the future...

Welcome aboard....

That sounds kinda pricey to me...

I'd be looking to get one in that shape for around 8K if the engine and tranny were solid...

Just my opinion...

I agree with RL above, the price is a little high for the market now. I think his 8K is a little low, though. It looks pretty clean to me, and stock is what you'd get if your looking for reliablity. It'd be easier to teel if you included a shot of the engine bay, but, if it has the hard lines for the IC running on top of the engine, it's been left alone. That little bit of rust on the door bottom, ain't no big deal (some Permatex rust inhibitor will hold that off for years) If they won't budge on the price, I'd hold off. There are many quality truck out there, and some good ones here in the "Trucks FS Section".

Good luck and welcome

The rust spots means the truck has been driving in the winter of a salt region. The rest of the problems are mostly common (radio, valve seals) or minor. The window speed might be normal unless your used to older slow GM windows. If they are really really slow I don't they are an epensive fix anyways.

IMO the rust spot means the car should NOT be bringing top dollar which is what the asking price it. If I was looking for a rust free truck, I would pass on it. I not 100% up on SyTy pricing in this market but my gut would be under $10K.

That price is way to high right now. :2cents: If you can live with a few blemishes and rust spots and can get it for less I would go for it. That truck looks pretty clean from a few steps back and has low miles. Have someone run datamaster on it if you can.

Re: help me decide on a TY

I agree with the other guys on here. I would say the truck is worth around $10 or so. It's not perfect, but at the same time it is in pretty good shape. Keep in mind the seats and seat belt recievers that are damaged are an easy fix. I even know a guy who has the parts... :)

Where are you located?

Are you located in Texas?? Looks like you are looking at the ty they have been trying to sell on CL for a while. If so and you want help I am in N. Dallas and would help you if you wanted, you can pm me. I would not pay that for that truck, you can get nicer ones from board members with documentation on most.

The color is cool with me. I wouldn't pay over $8500.00 for it. Now way on earth he'd get his asking price. A few months ago on e-bay there was a really nice white 93 in Cali. He was asking 13,500.00 That would have been better to get than the one your looking at.

Re: help me decide on a TY

13k is nuts..... 8k is somewhere better. Face it, these trucks arent worth shit anymore and there are currently trucks for sale right now that are in better condition that are more worth spending 10k on. Yeah, Id love to see the trucks going for more and the values be a bit better....but they arent.

Id give 7500k for this truck regardless of mileage. Mileage doesnt mean a thing when the truck hasnt been taken care of in the first place. I recently looked at a 38k Ty that was BEAT and looked more like 338k on it...no joke.

Rust, dents, scratches are money to have removed if your doing it yourself. Missing radio, new window motors needed. Thats only the stuff you pointed out.... guarantee that theres more if someone who knew the trucks inside and out looked at it with you. :2cents:

Re: help me decide on a TY

over 13K is crazy, if there was not one thing wrong with it, with 50 some thousand might be worth it. $8,000 to $8,500 is more like it.

Did you go for it?

Agree that $13k is too much, folks are right at around $8k if more signs of rust than just on the rear door. If only on door I might say $10 AT MOST. Will it be a daily driver?

Window motors not to bad to fix yourself had to do both of mine over time. First side bought BIG rivot gun next side used nuts and bolts as rivots require you to have three arms :)

This is the one I'm looking at. In discussions with my wife on it. I think that the asking price is pretty high considering what I need to do to make it my 100% daily driver.

The plan is that when I buy my Ty (whichever one it happens to be), I'll drive it for about a week, then give it to a friend of mine who owns a shop and say, "rebuild it."

Any mods that we do, the original parts will be kept safely!!

Re: help me decide on a TY

wow...this is a great community I'm getting ready to become a part of!

I have a 67 Camaro I'm restoring and a 63 C10 and have had some helping hands along the way, but never have I had so many people jump to help me out!

For those in the area who know what's what, I will gladly take your offer of help! I'll be heading up that way on Wednesday if someone wants to go with me or meet me for a second check.

It is in Sherman, TX on highway 82 halfway between 35 and 75 on the north side of the highway.

The truck is #0722 for those that may know the story on it.
