Plastic boot on steering shaft needed??

Ok so I've searched and searched and the answer is probably common sense but just want to make sure....

Do I need to keep the plastic boot that is on the steering shaft? When I bought the truck it was wrapped with a heat shield that is now falling apart and just plain looks like crap. Ditch it or keep it and rewrap it?

get a solid steering shaft from a jeep, and ditch the stocker. it is there to prevent the rubber thing from melting.

Yep the good old rag joint. That's why you don't get all the sloppiness with an upgraded steering shaft because they don't have one.

I have one somewhere , but like they said put in the solid shaft theres no better feeling than a nice solid shaft in your hands (sorry had to it was there )

I think that plastic piece was put in to prevent a rock getting into the u-joint.
GM don`t like adding things to vehicles unless they have to.
There were some cases of loss of steering and accidents.

Is the upgraded steering shaft keyed? In other words, does it only go in one way and I don't need to worry about my steering wheel ended up slightly off center after the installation?

Just make ABSOLUTELY SURE that you get to bolt in the groove that attaches to the steering box or else the steering shaft may pull off. Jeff Scott had it happen to him. You can read about it here.

and theres nothing worse than a shaft pulling off early
LOL

I just notched the cherokee shaft I used and ran a ziptie to hold it up. It doesn't need much resistance, but I wont trust friction holding it up on it's own.
